What are you listening to?

I was 14 when they played what turned out to be their final UK gigs and I read the music press at the time, remember thinking I’d be able to go the next time. But, there never was. Seen David Byrne solo, but it’s not the same. The great thing is we have some glorious filmed concerts to watch. “Stop Making Sense” is one thing, but to me the highpoint is when they had Belew on guitar like in this filmed Rome concert

Yay!

I saw Belew play once in a very intimate venue (the old 9:30 club in DC, for those of you from that time and place), and he was extraordinary. Not only was his musicianship incredible, but I was very impressed by how warm his stage presence was. He immediately made you want to like him.

RIP Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine, his arpeggiated chords on this were amongst the first things I learned on guitar

Saw them twice. Once in a club in 1977, and a bit later at the school concert. Oh, wait, and a third time in the nice school auditorium. But all before remain in light and the big band.

Here’s a link on Bandcamp to some of her work:

My son and I had a great chat with Belew and the rest of the Crimson ProjeKCt when they were in Melbourne; they were so relaxed and friendly.

We definitely need to lure Belew into playing VCVRack via MIDI guitar.:guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar:

I think he’s been busy with his Flux app

I saw Belew at a small club in SF (Slims). Pino Paladino was playing bass!

SOPHIE was on to something very special. A huge loss. Hadn’t kept current since the early PC Music days but that’s my soundtrack for tonight.

yep. I didn’t know about this stuff back then, so it’s kind of new to me. I listen to hannah diamond and 100 gecs all the time.

Hadn’t thought about this track for a long time, but it came up in a conversation in MIDIError’s latest podcast. Fun times…

Doubles as a nice round of Geoguesser. I’ve been to the 2:16 spot and possibly drove by 2:42.

Agreed - always sad to loose someone so talented so early. Some extraordinary stuff here;

This from when they were an ‘experimental drummerless trio’ - there were a few bands in Sheffield doing this kind of thing but only them and Cabaret Voltaire really got anywhere. I have the 12" somewhere …

We just need someone to develop a series of wild-animal-sounding modules!

You’ve got me started on the Peel sessions now. I studied in Sheffield, too late for the Human League but I did see CV at the Octagon. I remember finding the sharp bass sound painful so stuffed some tissues in my ears.

Chris Watson now a reknowned wildlife sound recordist, here’s a current series on BBC R4. Clearly his hearing didn’t suffer too much.

That’s so good. Obviously not Icelandic, but the vocals remind me of Bjork in the Sugarcubes and though not a big fan of that kind of lurching thrash metal/hardcore sound it fits together really well.

As for the video, seems odd if no other bands have taken advantage of their touring schedule in that sort of way though I guess it’s only recent that everyday phone video has got good enough for that not to have become a dizzying lurching mess.

Yes, I came across tricot a few days ago and am quite enamoured with this bubbly, vocal-y take on ~math rock. As a teenage metal head, their 2011 EP is goooodd
