Virginia Astley “From Gardens Where We Feel Secure” 1983

From Wikipedia: "Stewart Mason, writing for AllMusic, stated:

Almost entirely instrumental, save for a few wordless vocals on “A Summer Long Since Past,” and featuring little instrumentation besides Astley’s piano and some subtle woodwinds, the album is a lovely 35-minute meditation built around field recordings Astley made of the ambient sounds of the rural English countryside. This description makes the album sound much more twee and insubstantial than it actually is; however, Astley is no mere ambient noodler. These nine songs are melodically rich and varied; mood pieces in the truest sense of the term."

I really enjoyed listening to this album.

This came up on a ‘recommended’ play today and I realised I’d never heard Mark Hollis’s solo album, but loved Talk Talk and this just flows on from his work on the last two TT albums.

I love all these Holger Czukay pieces. An early favorite of mine was ‘Good Morning Story’ when I was growing up, and then that became a bridge to discovering so many other great pieces and bands and artists. Big props to the Tone Casualties team who sent me a bunch of buttons and stickers and told me to ‘stay weird’ for sending them some kind of far-out teenage thank-you note. Funny how little things like that can stay with you for years and years.

Fell down the rabbit hole on YouTube of people doing covers at Krautrock Karaoke nights, when I discover the main man himself involved

It’s like creating a little salon named the Mona Lisa Club where artists gather to paint related works and then in strolls Leonardo de F’ing Vinci.

This time next month it’ll be 60 years since the Please Please Me single was released in the UK.

When I hear early Beatles tracks like that it reminds me of going to see some schoolmates who had a covers band named The Outlaws, half of which were those songs like Boys, Saw Her Standing There etc. They were really good and completely not what was supposed to be going on in 1984

I turned 11 in January of 1963. I remember their US radio debut well :grinning:

wow, I would have liked that in that year. There were a lot of sort of retro band then, although more US focused. bands like leaving trains, green on red, the feelies, rain parade, the lyres…

Someone mentioned Deafheaven, so I immediately remembered this song for some reason. Funny how I forgot the band’s name and had to google “shoegaze post black bands”. Just something you never imagine typing into search engine
