What are you listening to?

ah yes the Analog Lab bundle, it’s excellent, now going in the sale for not much more than some people sell a hundred presets for other instruments. They map a few main instrument macros like attack, cutoff, reverb wetness mix etc though I would recommend upgrading it to the full V Collection around the Black Friday sales when it usually goes for half price if you get the chance, there’s so much to play with in there e.g. their emulation of the Fairlight, CMI V, contains an 8 lane sequencer, the Synclavier V lets you get into editing individual partials etc.

Pink Floyd is one of the best rock bands of the past. Now no one writes such cool music. Gone are the glorious days of Pink Floyd, Nirvana and Scorpions.

I remember when Nirvana got big there were people moaning about where have all the great bands gone. I think there’s always good music being made by great bands, just takes some finding.

Bite your tongue for putting Pink Floyd in the same sentence as Nirvana.

I agree. for a while I was mostly listening to music from the 70’s and earlier, but sometime in y2k I started working around a bunch of young people who obviously listen to more current stuff, so I got some good tips, and also realized it wasn’t really good for my career or self esteem to ignore all this stuff. Anyway… yes, there is a ton of good music being made now. I still “buy” “albums”, but usually they are new things. There are good reviews in pitchfork and the quietus. One interesting thing that’s going on now is all these very young bands from the UK making “prog” music. It doesn’t sound like Genesis! I’m thinking of Black Midi, Black Country New Road, The Bats, Hen Oggled (ok, they are old…). So much good stuff.

For me I’m forever finding things from the last 60 years of music that I missed so as the pile of good stuff only ever grows I see every day as the best day for music so far. I just found out this guy lives literally round the corner from me and I love this track. Check out the Gilmour vibe from the intro and outro sections.

I fault the industry more than the bands. If your view of music is in terms of ROI (musos are just a stock portfolio) rather than art making, and you’re thinking buy low/sell high, this is corrosive to music. There is very nice music out there. I just don’t think it gets promoted, so we have to find it by accident.

A lot of good stuff is on places like bandcamp, soundcloud and youtube and has effectively bypassed record company involvement entirely. Yes, the downside for the artists is not having a slick marketing machine to fall back on, but then they also don’t face being in hock for decades because of it.

Yeah, this notion of how there’s no good music being made anymore I often see expressed in Youtube comments and… no, just no. It’s quite laughable, really. The kids’ music is alright

There are downsides, yes. Proper production for example. An other downside is medium fragmentation. Web radio is nice but the majority is theme based. So no real surprises. Just more of the same but slightly different.

As you may know, Spotify has a Top5 list of where listeners of an artist are located. Some time ago, I had single-handedly put my city on there. This band and album is so criminally underrated. 21st century’s Kraut-Rock (emphasis on the latter)

This

It’s out there. Just don’t expect to hear it on the radio or from an algorithmically-generated playlist. I would put Radiohead’s “There There” up against any of those guys’ work. Oops - that’s 18 years old, maybe a bad example.

lol, classic “dad rock”!

Saw these guys live a couple of times.

My first touch with Pink Floyd was the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ Album. The first live concert was during the Animals tour (in Zurich) and the second one during the ‘Momentary Lapse of Reason’ tour (in Basel).

After the ‘Dark Side’ Album I was ‘going’ back to the earlier albums and there are really good pieces of songs or part of songs. I’m an ‘old guitar sock’ and I still like the PF (and the solo works of D.Gilmour and R.Wright) music in all their facets.

Ok, I think music, like so much else, is a matter of taste, and I generally love music (listening and playing) in different styles or categories.

I’m always pleasantly surprised how well these work, in Spotify at least.

You are probably right. Right now, Imagine Dragons and 30 Seconds to Mars are pretty good. Of course, this is not an AC / DC drive, but quite decent and high-quality music.

this. so. very. much.

and take that from a guy who’s been on this planet for half a century. also, check out rick beato’s youtube channel, especially the videos on the top 10s he checks out. i love how he’s so into the new stuff, and he’s even about a decade older than i am.

okay, rock isn’t “in” right now, but there’s lots of excellent stuff being made.

for some excellent bands from this century (very) roughly in the tradition of pink floyd, check out:

  • porcupine tree
  • the pineapple thief
  • samsara blues experiment
  • riverside
  • gazpacho
  • the dear hunter
  • haken
  • oceansize
  • leprous
  • soen
  • tool

Christian Peters from that band has a couple of VCV works on his YT channel. I came across one during my first days with it.
