AdiQ patches/music

@Olival_Clanaro, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you get a nice deserved break from university soon too!

@LarsBjerregaard, thanks man, and yes sometimes you have to wash those hard-to-reach spaces with extra reverb haha!

@down_of_hares, thanks so much, and I am really trying to find that happy place between simple structure & complex sounds, and there is so much to learn and try. It’s funny though, I never end up with the idea I started with, which is equally frustrating & fun.

Very beautiful music and great atmosphere! Listened to on repeat already 10 times and not can stop. It is a pity that the track is quite short. :slightly_smiling_face:

Wow, thanks @Evgeny, you are too kind sir!

My musical metaphor for the human brain during and after enjoying some fresh brewed Sunday morning coffee. Hope you guys are all having a nice holiday season!

…a patch made by writing an extremely basic 16 bar chord progression in Ableton, exporting the midi file into Squinky Labs’ Seq++ module and setting the polyphony to 4. This sequence was used to supply chords to a Bleak pad and its bottom notes to a Dexter bass. The notes from the chords were then played by a sequential switch to make an FM-OP/Debriatus arpeggio going through 4 AS Stereo Delays being crossfaded through a Vector Mixer. Neil samples the arpeggio for granular texture…

Thanks Lars!

A “generative ambient” patch I didn’t feel like making a video for since its kind of relaxing just to see where the s&h takes it… AudibleAmbience.vcv (51.8 KB)

Some very chill and soothing stuff going on in this patch. Amazing what you can get out of a s&h sometimes. Happy accidents!

I’m so glad you checked it out and liked it @rickglasser. This patch gave me some peace during a typically stressful part of the year for me, which is why I wanted to share it with you guys to listen or noodle with.

Hi everyone! Free time for VCV is scarce these days b/c I am on my last semester of school before I graduate, I started an actual eurorack case about a month ago that I am really excited about, and I sadly haven’t finished or recorded music in what feels like ages. I hope to incorporate hardware with my VCV workflow in the next month or so when I have more time and energy, start sharing videos again, and participating more with the community.

That said, lately, I have been dreaming about having a hardware polysynth to make pads, and although I don’t usually use midi with VCV, I wanted to try and patch one up for the hell of it. I was trying to go for a more dark, moody, analog kind of vibe with this, which I’m not sure if I achieved exactly, but at the very least I think it has some nice character.

So, it has a 6 voice polyphony, and it is very Arturia Keystep friendly, since it is wired to utilize aftertouch, velocity, modwheel, and pitchwheel. It uses one copy of Vult Bleak, but it also sounds great if I switch Bleak out with a Lindenberg Woldemar (use mix output, turn up saw, modulate sine knob with a umap). More details in Notes module within the patch. Feel free to jam with this or incorporate in a full patch or piece of music, I would be honored!

Hello:) Finally made a video using this hardware setup I’ve been slowly building. Details, including my life story, are in the youtube description, but basically it’s an 8 step sequence sent to a BassStation2 from Keystep. Then, I ran that one sound source through arbhar, then Magneto, QPAS, Mimeophon, ES-9, and finally into VCV Rack for reverb and recording. Twisted knobs for 16 mins until I felt like I got everything out the patch I wanted.

I apologize in advance for my low effort video and not including VCV screen. I will try and get better at this as I go. Cheers everyone!

Lovely sounds Adi! I didn’t know you’ve been building a eurorack, exiting  I’m building one as well, it’s a lot of research. Your line up of modules so far seems quite identical to Omri’s, I’ll be interested to see what direction you take it. Great to hear from you again!

Thanks Lars! Yeah, it’s quite the journey getting into hardware. I already have had some tough moments when I have thought it’s maybe not for me, or maybe I didn’t make the right module decisions. But, overall it has been a rewarding experience.

I think the main difference between my rack and Omri’s is that I have a PNW that gives me more modulation & timing options w/o having to rely on the computer, since I don’t have semi modulars like he does. And I got one of those 1u Audio interfaces so I can incorporate guitar pedals, like this Big Sky I got. It is cool having some of the same modules Omri does, so I learn from the master  I’m not sure i enjoy using the morphagene very much, but I realized I can turn it into a glitchy drum machine, so maybe that’s what i do with it. I also realized the morphagene and QPAS can be used as a stereo vca, which is just one example of how every one of these modules have so much depth and possibility, which makes them all worth it as first modules for me.

My next moves are probably the Euroburo when it comes out to get more utilities and effects, and I am dying for some vco’s like a Cs-L and just maybe basic analog ones or one with some crazy vintage chip in it. I also want a hardware poly synth and a better sound card. But, this is definitely not something i can accomplish overnight financially, like i’m not even working now b/c of this virus situation. So, for now I will just embrace limitation, be patient, and have fun with what I got.

Anyway, I am very happy for you that you are taking the eurorack plunge, and I am super interested in what you got going Lars! Do have a modular grid? Can’t wait to hear great things from you in the future!

Yeah, it’s quite the journey and I tend towards overanalyzing which doesn’t make it snappier

You’re welcome to have a look at my Morphagene playlist here, and see if there’s some inspiration for you: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO_Yrrwhqwd0bNTJqkwBwX8hG81Ig3u4N

I spent a good deal of time looking at it (and the Typhoon, the Nebulae and others) but ended up going with the Mimeophon for my first case, which I’m really looking forward to playing with.

I’ve been making playlists for most of the modules I’ve been heavily researching, so feel free to go to my channel and look at the playlists named “modular - something…” where I’ve tried to gather the best videos about a module I could find.

I can also highly recommend divkid’s “Feeding the monster” series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIWGcb0CxSCE2NwS9autu9ZKLpt2LgKLJ with Chris Meyer (Learning Modular) and Kim Bjørn. It’s the real experts and also very entertaining. I recommend starting with episode 2. I got a hell of a lot of good knowledge out of that series and also laughed a lot

The case I’m building on ModularGrid is here - it’s still work in progress and not finished yet, but the top row should be mostly done:

The ES-9 is actually arriving on Monday so now I have no excuses for not going through with it

Do you have your case on ModularGrid? When you’re saying “dying for VCO’s” and mention the CS-L, maybe look at the TS-L as well, which is a lot smaller but can do a lot. I’ve got a playlist for that as well. If you like wavetable VCO’s, like the Wave in VCV Rack, then maybe check out the Erica Graphic VCO I have in there as well.

Good luck and let’s entertain each other

Thanks for the morphagene playlist, I’ve seen some of these before, but didn’t know about the divkid series, I love it, especially this MS20 one! I will definitely go through some more of these playlists you made for more ideas. This “Feeding the monster” series looks great too, I’ll check it out when I get some time:)

I think Mimeophon is a fantastic choice as a first module, it is near perfect imo and my absolute favorite. If I could only keep one module, it would probably be this one. I actually decided to start my case as soon as I heard about the arbhar, and I love it dearly, but it definitely has a couple issues like phasing and dry/wet bleeding I’ve noticed that keep me from saying its perfect.

I can’t wait to see what you will do with the ES-9. I can’t quite get over the latency thing myself, and has made me rethink my whole hybrid workflow gameplan several times. For me, proper timing when doing round trips with VCV Rack has been elusive and frustrating. I’m sure there’s some things I am doing wrong, because others like Omri are using it perfectly, but for now, I just keep it simple and try not to mix and match strictly VCV parts with VCV/eurorack round trips. I love how you can just use it as a mixer though. I went to jam with a friend w/o a computer and it was perfect:)

I like this rack you are planning a lot, and it seems well thought out. I have never heard of this FX Aid until now, and wow, of course now I want it, lol. I love how this rack can probably stand on its own pretty well without computers or other hardware, and I think it’s important to have that option. This Ts-L does look awesome, but I think I have my mind set on the Cs-L. I just like the idea of the complex vco. I also have my eye on a Doepfer A-111-4 and a SID GUTS deluxe to get my vintage chip fix.

What case are do you have or are planning to get? Your power consumption is already pretty high for a many of the cheaper cases, but I guess a intellijel performance or Mantis would do the trick.

Anyway, good stuff, I hope we can chat more and share music.

Here’s the current state of my case which I’m sure will change drastically over the next year or so: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1119644

Yeah, I’m happy with my choice of the Mimeophon. I see that you have the Magneto as well, and that sure is a lovely piece of kit. I was contemplating it as well before settling on the Mimeophon, but there’s a good chance it might find it’s way into a case #2 of mine, if there will ever be one (calm down now, I keep saying to myself).

Sorry to hear about the issues with Arbhar, I hope you’ll manage to get the best out of it, or trade it in if you must.

I’m exited about the ES-9, which arrived today in pristine condition  Both it’s capable mixer and with the latest firmware, both a standalone and a host configuration. The idea with my case is that it will be complete/self-sufficient enough to bring along to a modular meetup, or just noodle around on it without worrying about the mouse and Rack, and in daily use it can be tethered to the computer, using VCV Rack for mixing, recording, more crazy sequencing and other modulation. I think latency will always be an issue, and I don’t think it will seriously work to e.g. use the effects in the eurorack as send-effects from Rack. But regarding clock-timing I think it should be possible to use both gates from Rack and euro in sync, by using signal-delay on the gates only going to modules in Rack. I have the idea of having two clocked in Rack, connected via a signal delay, where the first would supply gates to the euro, and the second (delayed) to modules in Rack. I’ll see how it works out when I get up and running.

Yeah, stuff like FX-AID can give you the GAS, it’s real for sure. Man, there’s so many modules I would like to put in that case, it’s actually really difficult to restrict myself  The CS-L is a great piece of kit as well, for sure. You can get a hell of a lot of timbral variety out of that.

My case will be a Mantis, so 2 x 104 HP. It has a lot of juice on the powersupply, 3000ma of +12V, so that’s good and a lot more than the others of that size. The others mostly seem underpowered and I would be over budget by now.

Looking at your case, I’m very curious about how you like the Magneto and the QPAS so far? Both very interesting modules… I think it’s great you left some space for completing it more.

I definately look forward to chatting about it, both here and over on the eurorack FB group as well if you’re there. That’s where all the wise birds hang out

That’s exciting you got your ES-9! I remember I ordered it within my first purchase, but was the last module I received months later. I think you have the right idea of how to best utilize it in a workflow. I hope the timing works good for you when sequencing. I would have a hybrid patch sounding nice with signal delays, and then if I stop/start the clocks, it would sound off again, and this would drive me crazy while I’m just trying to create something and not think too much. I was probably using it like you said as a send/return though, so maybe this is just never a good idea.

The Mantis seems like a good call power-wise, and I think there is even some kind of deck saver type lid for covering it.

As far as the Magneto, I really didn’t know if I was going to like it at first, maybe because a lot of things are fixed and can’t be adjusted, like timings on the 4 knobs in relation to each other, the wow/flutter/crinkle can only be turned up, & the fixed pitches(in shift mode). But, I already knew all that going in, and the more I play with it, the more I absolutely love the echo mode. The pitch shift is ridiculously cool when you turn up the feedback and crinkle it a touch. It is extremely well made and sounds better than most effects I’ve heard. Just the spring reverb alone is worth a couple hundred bucks imo. I still have yet to try the looper mode which apparently you can set to various scales. Yeah, this thing deep, I love it.

I fell in love with QPAS instantly. I love messing with 4 peak resonances in stereo. And it has these separate !! inputs that seem to ping the filter, like I would get something like kicks or little percussive hits depending on the cutoff frequency. The smile pass filter is something special compared to the typical LP/HP/BP, it has this nice balance to the frequencies and overall volume no matter where you are on the cutoff knob. I can’t wait to one day get a nice analog vco in my rack and run it through this thing.

I’ll try and check out the eurorack FB group more often. I know i’m a member, and even though I rarely look at FB anymore, this seems like a great place for this type of info.

Yeah, I got lucky with my ES-9. Seing as it was impossible to get hold of, I sent out some request to dealers asking if they had an ETA. Everyone said “sorry” except Milk Audio in Italy, who said that there was an error with their out of stock sign on the website, and that they actually had one more and would I like to buy it? I said… YES!! So here it is.

The Magneto just sounds wonderful in the videos I’ve seen, like something special. And the more QPAS videos I watch the more interesting it sounds as well. I have a strong feeling it will be in the famous queue for case #2.

The eurorack FB group is great, because there’s a hell of a lot of good knowledge shared there, and lots of events organized.

Looking forward to more tunes from you Adi, as always… Stay safe.

VCV Rack patch w/ 2 field recordings I made just using my phone (birds outside my house @ 430am, & train station lady with cool voice talking to herself) , polyphonic arpeggio, chords sent to Plaits in speech synthesis mode, kick/snare, and some ValhallaVintageVerb & Delay. I’m sort of proud of this bass, which is just a square wave w/ some wave folding, saturation, & comb filtering.

I’m am digging this Modular Fungi Lights Off quite a bit, it would be so cool if you modulate this effect…

Nice one Adi, I really like the laid back tempo and the really big sound-stage you made there. Have you been practicing your EQ/mastering? And yes, that bass sounds awesome. Which wavefolder did you use?
