Venom Development blog - Latest: Ratio module + 6 others

How much are you thinking for this plugin? And will you add onto it in the future like how you did with Venom Oscillations? I may have to wait for a while since I’m planning to save more money this year but I’m not opposed to a Black Friday sale… just need this to not be so appealing it makes my wallet ache now! Can’t wait to hear more in the meantime!

It will be a full collection right from the start, priced similarly. There will be multiple base modules, each available for a nominal fee, or the whole collection at a discount. Some modules include a variant, and all come with expanders.

More info will trickle out

each little tidbit is feeding my interest, a new venom collection, multiple base modules, variants, expanders, sounds like a lot of fun to me

This sexy filter sounds so cool after I saw your video. You should submit your filters to the VCV library. Thanks for your input,

Thanks for the kind words @Luca-Feelgood. Not to pollute @DaveVenom’s thread (well ok, just a bit!) but all my stuff is hardware based, and the hardware is still very much in a DIY state. Or, more like a DIM state (Do It Myself). Once I get better build docs, have more than a few working synths, and/or figure out some manufacturing plan (ouch) I’d love to. But right now adding to the library would just cause confusion. Follow-ups appreciated at Zoxnoxious demo thread.

Well I plan on getting the whole bundle instead of individual modules so all we need is a general hint of the total price and a good complimentary video so I can really hear what is possible… might be a future possibility for me since I’m not buying yet, so I’ll have to wait a while… my wallet got more priority this year and it’s not gonna be spending as much this year

I am also very, very excited to for this top be released. I would be very eager to assist as a Linux (primary) or Windows tester.

not sure if this is the right place.

if i use my spice factory module, i see that the positive and negative sin are not in sync.

i dont know how to solve this.

or is this by design?

thanks in advance.

i am on ubuntu 24 Linux. actual Rack version.

This isn’t really a development issue - it could easily have been its own question under the Plugins & Modules category. But anyway . . .

By default the Positive Spice and Negative Spice are free running, with no guaranteed phase relationship between them. But they can be synced to the Slice via the Spice Sync button in the Slice section. The Positive Spice hard syncs on the rising edge of the Slice square. The Negative Spice syncs on the falling edge of the Slice square. It is all described pretty well in the documentation, with a nice image showing the phase/sync relationships.

Aha, ok. Will check that and perhaps ask a question in the category.

thank you for the quick reply.

I think I have enough testers, but I will keep you in mind if I need more. Thanks!

I was recently comparing the sound of my Venom XM-OP (using phase modulation) to the Bogaudio FM-OP.

The XM-OP envelope has a curve control that can produce concave down rise and concave up fall, which is typical of many envelope generators.

The FM-OP has an exponential option instead that causes both the rise and fall to be concave up. In the modular world I think this is most often done with VCAs, not typically with envelope generators themselves.

I have come to the conclusion that the exponential response is very satisfying in the FM-OP, and I cannot directly get that sound with the XM-OP.

I would like to enhance the XM-OP to make the exponential response available. I can think of a few ways to do it.

  1. Add an “Exponential envelope” module context menu option that directly controls the envelope shape. The exponential shape would be applied after the curve computation. Setting the curve to linear and enabling the exponential option should give results very similar to the FM-OP.
    • Variant 1A would be to add a tiny EXP button somewhere in the upper envelope region of the faceplate instead of adding a context menu option.
  2. Slightly modify option 1 to “Exponential envelope response” that would apply to the Level VCA, XM Depth, and Feedback Depth, but not the envelope output.
  3. Slightly modify option 2 to “Exponential level response” that would only apply to the Level VCA, but not the XM depth, Feedback depth, or envelope output.
  4. Expand the options in the ENV tiny buttons above Level, Depth, and Fdbk. Every existing option except Off would have an exponential response variant. I love this flexibility, but I don’t like having so many options. That seems like too many on general principal, and also I think I might run out of easily distinguishable colors - I would need 13!
  5. Double the number of tiny buttons above Level, Depth, and Fdbk. The existing buttons would stay as they are now, and the 2nd button would apply an exponential response if enabled. I think I can fit in the 2nd button (total of six envelope buttons instead of the current three)

I think my favorite option from a functionality standpoint is option 5. It is probably the most involved from a development standpoint.

A close second from a functionality standpoint is option 1, which would be trivial to implement. Variant 1A would be a bit more to implement, but more convenient to use.

I also like options 2 and 3 since they are trivial to implement. From a functionality standpoint I think they are very close to option 1.

I think I can rule out option 4.

What do others think?

It will probably be a couple months before anything is implemented, perhaps longer before it hits the library.

Yep, that looks like the one to me too. Another great VCO you made.

I like 1a 2 or 3, and individual access to the ratio/detune mods

I vote 1 (1A) first and 2 would be my second

ich vote 1a and 5.

Thanks to everyone that responded.

I just studied the FM-OP options more carefully, and ran some experiments, and I realize the exponential option applies to the Level response only, regardless where the level amount comes from. So I will implement option 3. I might try to add an Exp button around the Level instead of a context menu option.

I also discovered there is another critical component to the FM-OP sound regarding the source of the feedback. The FM-OP uses the internal sine wave after the Level has been applied.

In contrast, the XM-OP always uses the raw internal waveform before any Level has been applied.

This makes a HUGE difference.

I will also add an option to use Post Level feedback, either in the context menu or as a button near the Fdbk.

Here is another sneak peak for my upcoming Chaos Boxes premium plugin for VCV that should be released later this month.

This one introduces the Vlippoo Box - my take on Rob Horkijk’s Blippoo Box. It also uses the Venjolin from my earlier video - my take on Rob Hordijk’s Benjolin.

Very much looking forward to these!!!

Love the names too!

Here is a sneak peak of the last synth in the upcoming Chaos Boxes collection.

This is the Hybrid Knot - my take on the Lorre Mill Double Knot. It blends features of the Double Knot versions 2 and 3, with some additional twists not in either.

Chaos Boxes also includes an additional variant for each of the Rob Hordijk inspired modules, as well as a couple expanders that work with all the synths!

I am still hoping to release by the end of the month!
