VCV Rack 2 Free and Pro released

thanks a lot, can i ask you where you find it ?

I looked on vcvrack.com, but couldn’t find it.

I found it in the Rack2pro installation folder: Rack2pro\LICENSE.html

You can download rack2 pro and run the installer to get that file, before you purchase the license.

Modulation from Bitwig seems to be working just fine here.

Rack makes available, and dynamically updates, all controllable parameters as modules are added and taken away. No need to assign controls to automation within Rack

One slight glitch exists with this but is easily worked around:

Bitwig displays the most recently changed control at the top of the list of automation targets. And so if, for example, you move a knob position, you expect that control to appear as the most recently changed control - but upon releasing the mouse button, this is replaced with a dummy parameter - “Reserved”.

To avoid this happening, simply click the control without changing it - this prevents “Reserved” replacing the most recently changed control in Bitwig.

Amazing, well done to all involved!

Running like a clock inside Bitwig as a VST. Fantastic work @Vortico and everyone who worked hard to get this done. Many thanks.

Another thing to note - the VST has 1024 automation targets

If the combined count of controls belonging to all the modules in the patch reaches this number, any modules added after this will not be automatable, unless you remove existing modules to bring the total controls below that number

Wondering if 1024 is a hard limit in the VST spec (probably is)

You can then load another VST instance and divide the controls perhaps? But definitely got a point.

Hm. It won’t run on my machine. When I double click the application it thinks for a second, but than nothing. Doesn’t show up in the task manager. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Congrats to @Vortico for this great release! I hope you’ll get some well deserved sleep  Congrats to all 3rd party devs and community for the huge work of porting their collections! so cool to see so many collections popping up in the update menu!

A special congrats for all the devs who put some extra work to redesign their components to match the new UI style! It looks so cool!

It would have to be a pretty big patch to hit 1024! But might be a scenario for complex sequencers with matrices etc. There could be some “timebomb” modules hiding in the library that “swallow” all the targets too.

The way around the problem, I guess, would be to remove a module that doesn’t require automating, then placing it back in again, so it doesn’t get allocated to the targets

No wait, it only runs as a background process. Is this the server-spot thingy?

yes indeed, but not something scary as of now I guess?

no, not really scary but good to keep at the back of the mind if it ever happens!

you’re much more likely to hit the single-core limit for VST instances first

Congratulations. Thanks to the development team and everyone else involved. Ordered the Pro version and it works nicely. Even the VST seems to work in Cubase 11.

128 target shoud be max per instance afaik, at least in Ableton. So don’t have a clue about 1024 target…

It’s a beast in Bitwig. You can send all 16 midi channels out from VCV to Bitwig tracks (whereas midi channels are merged to one in Live) and you can use midi CCs generated from CV > CC in VCV to modulate just about anything in Bitwig whereas Live instruments do not support being controlled by CCs generated from other plugins, only remote control midi devices (ie hardware). These 2 features alone made me buy Bitwig this weekend.

I have this plugins showed as to be updated:

HetrickCV NYSTHI OhemerPrems Substation.

They got download evereytime but after restarting the rack they got not installed.

Anyone else?

VCV RACK 2 Pro V

I did the same last week. Bitwig + Vcv = no more social life.

They are not downloaded until a tick appears next to them. If after downloading it returns to the version number next to the name instead of a tick it means download failed.

Keep clicking on them individually and eventually the downloads should complete. Substation in particular can be a pain as its a relatively large plugin file. But keep trying and it should work eventually.

You can also just set up an “Audio Rate” modulator on your instrument of choice and control it with one of the audio outs of Rack VST…

Modulation bandwidth varies greatly between devices, of course, but on Bitwig native devices (e.g. Polysynth) I’m seeing the ability to FM the filter up to 15-16KHz using this… And of course, full audio bit-depth (24-bit? 32-bit?) of the modulation is preserved, instead of 7-bit MIDI
