Surge XT

The surge MSEG is also not modulatable though!

I’m thinking some about Airwindows to be honest. I did an auto-port for CLAP. It’s on my mind…

And here I am again  A bit late, though, - many posts about excellent Watebable Osc already written above. But I’m gonna go out on a limb here and add a little spice, sorry… As I noticed, after saving presets (via “Save preset as” etc.) and recalling it later, WT-display doesn’t show the correct info (though, it looks like it loads correct wavetable and other knobs settings saved). E.g. if I save Basic-Sine HQ preset and then change it to another table and save the latter under a new name, after recalling the previous one (i.e. Basic-Sine HQ preset) it still shows the name AND background waves of the second preset (or vice versa). Please, check it out :sunglasses:

Ahh yeah I see. the engine is loading the right wavetable and the curve is the correct one but the background doesn’t invalidate when you load a VCV preset. I’ll either fix or open an issue now. Thanks!

Ahh yeah I see it. Good bug reports make good software! This is a tiny fix (there’s two wavetable load paths and one didn’t invalidate the UI). I’ll add it to my current PR and it will be fixed in the next nightly.

(Since things move fast if you can all remember to include the version number when you send bug reports that’d be great)

Very glad to finally be of some help :grinning: Best wishes to you and your wonderful colleagues!

I express my sincere admiration for the responsiveness of the Surge team - I just downloaded the latest release and everything is working properly now on WT-display. Many thanks!

A few other things fixed too including a problem with one shots which snuck in yesterday, making the menu more “squinky friendly” (and everyone else friendly too) and also putting the wavetable menu in the main menu as well as the jog selector menu.

Always be updating basicalky. Chuckle

Ok I have started with these and have a very basic and stupid question. I don’t see a VCA and so if I want to create the most basic patch (vco-vca-out) with an envelope generator controlling the vca I don’t see how to do this. Omris video uses a filter and the surge mixer and it appears that the mixer is doing the vca work. Is that necessary or what?

symlink on MacOS also works peachy, all my wavetables showed up no issue in the menu, with submenus and scrolling list. Awesome and now it’s less confusingly named as well!

Omri is using the Drive (input level) on the Filter as the VCA.

Alternatively you could use the Gain (output level) on the mixer.

And of course, being modular, nothing wrong with just using the Fundamental VCA (or any other) after the Filter if you prefer.

Thanks, I finally focused on that. After just playing around for 1/2 hour or so I am totally blown away by the audio quality. This thing sounds wonderful. Alot to learn but well worth it! Again, thanks so much to the developers.

Those speedometer meters around the knobs are pretty nifty. Whose idea was that? Now I won’t have to be throwing in so many slim meters :+1:

I can hardly wait for the rest of the documentation.

I noticed that when you bypass (I think) the Rotary and Reverb modules, nothing comes through. Is that expected behaviour?

The knob arcs and modulation vis you mean? MindMeld was already doing it in Rack but it’s pretty much established UI design language in the DAW/VST world that Surge originates from - most do something similar. In terms of whose idea it was originally - perhaps NI Massive was the first to do it? Not sure…

Sounds like it might be a bug - but I’ll let @baconpaul address that. Thanks for pointing it out.

It also works if you put the symbolic link to a folder, or make a folder, underneath Documents/Rack2/plugins/SurgeXTRack/build/surge-data/wavetables/ or Documents/Rack2/plugins/SurgeXTRack/build/surge-data/wavetables_3rdparty/. E.g. making "Documents/Rack2/plugins/SurgeXTRack/build/surge-data/wavetables/My Own/" and point it to your folder with wavetables.

Yes, on Windows 10:

C:\> mklink /?
Creates a symbolic link.

MKLINK [[/D] | [/H] | [/J]] Link Target

/D Creates a directory symbolic link. Default is a file
                symbolic link.
/H Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link.
        /J Creates a Directory Junction.
Link Specifies the new symbolic link name.
Target Specifies the path (relative or absolute) that the new link
                refers to.

You use the /D option to make a symlink to a directory.

Yeah I used spank a lot testing but modulate the mixer also works well

Oh please use the user area. Mods in the build may not survive updates

I just tried both the reverbs and the rotaries, and when bypassed inL → outL and inR → outR. I also looked at the code and that’s there in the generic FX base class.

So some more information on what you saw @john_rose would be really useful. I don’t see a bug in the code at latest nightly.

thanks

As you can see above, I had the same confusion. I have to say that from a naive user usability perspective, the lack of details on how to use amplitude envelopes is confusing. I’m not sure why, but I think I mistakenly thought that with 36 modules, Surge XT could probably do anything I thought up. Also, I was so used to using FM-OP as a voice, that I thought that surly the XT modules had “voice” capabilities.

Perhaps when the manual is done, it should address this a bit, to help newbies as well as oldies like me

For my continued testing, I have used the VCV ADSR envelope generator modulating the Surge XT MIXER gain.

I look forward to a possible future “voice” expander module that works with all of the oscillators.

ha yeah it is definitely the case in our design phase we thought “well if rack already has that lets not dup it unless ours is better or different” and “adsr envelope” and “simple stereo vca” both failed that test. the modules are intended to be used in an ecosystem.

I’ll add an introductory comment to that end to the manual. Solid suggestion. Thank you!

I think wise choices, and implementing k-chaffin’s doc idea is great.

If you ever do look to expand a bit, I think a stereo VCA that implements many of the features of the Bogaudio Velo would be a welcome addition. Velo conveniently provides knob and CV control of overall level, envelope, tremolo, and velocity. I’m not aware of any other VCAs with that convenience, and I think a stereo corollary would be great for Surge.
