Studio D: Music From The Rack

Playing VCV Rack like a Theremin, only more flexible/powerful. Verry cool

Thanks, Lars, it was a fun project. I haven’t done much directly with Pd for quite a while. It’s a very powerful environment for audio synthesis and processing, but it also supports the GEM graphics system. It’s actually a straightforward procedure to hook the webcam into Pd and translate the data into a set of useful coordinates for MIDI or for direct audio synthesis with Pd itself. I’m looking forward to the Pd support scheduled for VCV’s Prototype module. Meanwhile, it’s a simple matter to connect an external instance of Pd to VCV Rack.

This topic needs an update, here are some recent and not-so-recent things I’ve been doing with VCV Rack. First up, a crashy-bangy collision of Rack and a batch of prepared-piano samples.

After posting this one on YT I discovered that the tune has been used in a video game (IIRC). Surprised me.

I’m interested in doing a touch-up with the patch. I’d like to pursue a recommendation to set in just intonation, I need to find the best tuning module. Any suggestions appreciated.

Squinky Labs creates great modules. The Organ Three gets a little run here, playing an old study from a series of preludes and fugues. The fugue is posted on YT but I’m not especially happy with it these days.

Okay, last one for today. As the title says, I brushed off the Klee sequencer and took it out into the virtual countryside for a virtual spin. The patch is available at Taking The Old Klee Out For A Spin | Patchstorage.

Why not use Nysthi Scala? You can download .scl files from the Scala site [Stichting Huygens-Fokker: Scales]. Look for ji_12.scl for instance.

Soundtrack for Pd/GEM visuals, now a standalone work-in-progress.

A couple of new items already posted to my YT account. First up, revisiting a solo vocal recording I made some years ago. Supercell provides a rather strange congregation response to the vocal, I liked it so here 'tis.

Next up, an improvisation on acoustic guitar accompanied by VCV Rack. Bit of a moody meditation, I hope you enjoy it.

The day’s final entry, an excerpt from a long performance by a generative patch. Btw, the title is indicative only of the day the performance was recorded. “No symbols where none intended.”

Beautiful! I might try make this patch up myself, love the Supercell backing track fx!

Very interesting effect. Happy accident??

Happy accident as the result of lots of experiments, definitely.

That’s lovely Dave!

Thank you, Lars. The patch has been improved a bit recently, I’ll clean it up and post it to Patchstorage asap. It’s great fun to let play for an hour or so.

Hi I have tried the interesting patch. I can’t find any audio output module? The patch asks for macro oscillator 2, but in the video macro oscillator is used?

Greetings ! You can use whatever output module suits your system. I’m on Linux, the Skrylar Jack 4x4 is my output module of choice. Regarding the macro oscillator (version 1 is used in the patch, not v2): It’s a polyphonic version made by Xenakios available here for Win/Mac users:

If you’re on Linux I can provide a binary.

Best regards,
