Excuse another late reply! It’s becoming obvious that I’m not online as much. Love the ambient drone you posted in Jan. I like your thread and visit from time to time, but I think what I meant to say was, what are your current creative thoughts/concerns? Has AI changed your thoughts on how you want to create? Are you preoccupied/interested in any creative concepts? That sort of thing. Personally I’m going through a bit of a creative shift that I cant quite articulate, definitely has something to do with accepting an AI take over of music that most people create/consume and becoming ok with that. I think I’m going to do music old school, remain in obsurity, and go down with the ship with a smile on my face.
Well thanks Matt. About AI, I am to put it mildly a big AI sceptic and I mostly don’t like it. My thoughts on AI and music (or art generally) are mostly an extension of what I think of the landscape today.
There’s the music business, which is about creating output and getting paid/fame/whatever. I think of it mostly as “factory life” and it has never had one iota of my interest. I’m sure they’ll embrace AI with glee and continue to lower the bar as long as people are willing to listen and pay for it.
And then there’s a person making music simply for the joy of it, which is where I fall, in my very small way. In that I can’t see myself using AI. But I’m sure some people will find it interesting to play with.
My inspiration where creative concepts are concerned, are to absorb from all the great masters like Reich, Eno and the many creative geniuses that has pushed the envelope in ways I find inspiring and interesting, and then to incorporate what they teach me into my own musical leanings. That brings me joy. In other words to stand on the shoulder of giants and add my own twist. Or to steal inspiration whereever I find it, which is not from AI.
PS: Nice piece you just posted! It’s not really my own musical taste but I really appreciate all the work and refinement that went into it. Was it glued together in a DAW in the end? Oh, never mind, you answered that, Logic X ![]()
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I feel much the same way about the AI phenomenon. If anything I’m leaning even more into my human-y-ness, and it feels great. Nice to hear a bit about your process and influences. I’ve had a season or two of listening to the minimalist (for lack of a better term) hero’s but haven’t revisited them for years. Might put on some Glass on the way to work today!
