I’m afraid I’m only modifying the mscHack’s modules, because he doesn’t mind and let me do whatever I want with them, (at least so far).
It’s so much work though, I mean by that it’s not making me do music when I mess with skins. And I’d rather make noise, and music.
That is why I’m not even thinking of doing any other modules.
Ahh well, there’s the dark Audible Intruments
Hi, I don’t mean to cause trouble, and I am definitely not sharing these. I think those panel guidelines you linked make total sense. Seems this is like showing off an image of a replica prop you made from a film vs. going out and selling unofficial knock-off lightsabers or handing out Imperial logo stickers for people to slap on them. Its OK to show off our customizations here so long as they aren’t being shared, right?
As long as they don’t step over the bounds set out by the guidelines.
Oh, but that’s about distributing a plugin and getting a license, not about showing each other our own graphic customizations:
It is recommended to follow these guidelines for all plugins, but you are not legally obligated to do so. However, it is a requirement for:
distributing your plugin on the VCV Library.
obtaining a commercial plugin license.
Its pretty simple cloned panels will be removed from the thread.
If a module designer follows these guidelines then a user decides to edit the panel and clone part or all of someone else’s intellectual property this is outside the module designers control. However if a panel is cloned for personal use there is not much anyone can do about it. When a screenshot of it is shared here others may want the edited panel, which is distribution of copyrighted work. This is outside the control of VCV and thus circumvents the guidelines.
Thread locked until further notice.
Yes, modifying panels with others’ copyrighted work without their permission is fine for your own personal use.
But of course it’s no longer personal use when it’s posted on the internet

Can someone help me here. I really want to darken the core library modules so they are easier on my eyes. I’ve downloaded Inkscape and darkened a few of the files but replacing the old files in the program files under “C:\Program Files\VCV\Rack\res\Core” yields no results.
Thanks in advance!
The new svg files hav to go to the …Rack\Plugins-1\Fundamental folder! But please be careful because of the copyright reasons, suggest you to use modules from other developers for color changes!

Means that he even wants the copyright of the pictures of the modules!!!
Is that really the case? Pretty sure it’s just a case of don’t distribute the modified svg’s. If I post a video of my heavily modified rack on youtube is it lawyers at fifty paces? I find that hard to believe, @Vortico?
When you scroll a little up you can see that this thread was closed because some people including me showed their custom module skins.
So our studio for electronic music made a decision after talking with our lawyers: no VCV pictures on the covers and even not to credit for VCV at all in our productions to avoid any problems.
Not that artists are expected to give shout outs to their gear, but I never heard once of someone getting in trouble for mentioning their equipment in the liner notes. Plus, how could you even perform on stage with VCV if you had to ensure the laptop is never shown on video? The chilling effects of a frivolous copyright/trademark claim would be devastating, so it’s reasonable to expect such claims would never happen.
An analogy. I paint my Fendson LesCaster a nice new colour, I neglect to paint over the logo. Someone takes a photo of me & it on stage and posts it on the net (or I take a photo and post it just to show off my handy work), Fendson throw lawyers at me because the logo is still visible, can’t see that happening somehow.
Using the same analogy, if you were to have a Fendson LesCaster which happened to use a logo or trademark of a company that makes what you are customising then using their logo and distributing copies of your Fendson LesCaster could be liable grounds.
Show your custom module skins all you want but any clones of Hardware will be reviewed and or removed.
Were I to distribute copies of my LesCaster with the Fendson logo intact that would clearly be infringement and I would expect to be sued.
I can’t be bothered with changing my VCV modules yet again to remove the VCV logo, too busy enjoying the product / developing new modules, even though I couldn’t afford a defence lawyer, most of what little disposable income I have contributes to Andrew’s (and other premium module devs’) rent / mortgage / beer / food etc, so I’ll just have to take the risk
A lot of years ago, we were doing concerts at planetariums, because of the big white letters on the back of some keyboards we were asked to put some black tapes over the letters and the LEDs to avoid additional lights along the concerts. We did, what a mistake! After some weeks we got a letter from a lawyer that we changed the design of the keyboards of his clients without permission. It was a lot of work to avoid to pay any money. After this all keyboards were left in their flight cases backstage and were played via some MIDI keyboards without white letters and LEDs. We had learned our lessons so today we are very careful!
Nice. I think I’d have suggested that said lawyer waste his time & clients money elsewhere. Care to share the brand name so I can ensure I never spend money with them, should I ever have any.
