Jim Frye - Ambient

Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, back in the day we were truly innovative. I created 3 and 4 DOF arms and legs that we had no way to easily control in a useful way. The math behind reverse kinematics existed, but it was just the first step. When we made hexapod robots with 3 and later 4 servos on each leg, it became a serious programming challenge. I had an international team of three guys who not only solved the IK math, but created all of the code for sequencing multiple walking gaits. That code is still in use today. I found an ad from the heyday.

I made a new stop motion video. Space Robots from Outer Space performs Low Rider. I combine VCV Rack sound, stop motion filming with video backgrounds and effects. Take a look at the Space Robots latest adventure.

thanks buddy!

Sometimes I wish I could take my wife and dog onto that ship and take off. haha! The whole music, modeling, filming, editing, It’s a great escape. I just dive in. I’m currently wanting to make music videos of; Space Trucking (the original), the planet caravan soundscape patch, a midi based Iron Man cover… haha! I am considering attempting to overcome my FOD, fear of daw. I tried Reaper like 12 years ago and was really having trouble figuring anything out. Much later I found VCV and my electronic music world exploded. So maybe this SoundBridge? I hear it’s free for a 10 track version. Ten tracks may be enough for my purposes. I know you have more experience in this area than I do. I want cheap or free, I need intuitive UI. I do know someone local that uses Ableton Live. Anyway what do you use? Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

I don’t (yet) use a DAW Jim, so others are probably better at chiming in. If you’re on macOS then Garageband is probably pretty simple to get started with, but I think you’re on Windows. Otherwise Audacity (all platforms) is fairly simple, but that’s only for recording and editing some audio tracks, nothing else. You should probably describe what you want to do exactly…

oops sorry. haha! Well I need a way to more easily handle editing and playing back midi files. Although I can see the fun in the audio recording and manipulation as well. I will maybe make a separate post on the subject. Thanks

Sorry my text got deleted… I decided to try to recreate the original Space Truckin patch in 2.6. I tried to reproduce the sounds as accurately as I could. I want to use this music for my next Space Robot video. Problem is it is mostly a percussive ambient piece. There is no drums, guitar or bass. I added Dejavu for the melody sequence generation because I love the random yet repeatable nested repeat functionality. I added Palette and Flame. and VCV delay in a flanger mode for the guitar voice. I love that thick sound. I also added in a pristine clear version to help define it. I added a very simple drum routine and am now working on the bass. I have been working for a few weeks on the video and animation stuff. I’m trying to convey more emotion and tell a story rather than just wiggle the arms to the music. It’s very challenging.

I have a spare Bitwig Studio 8-Track key spare if you are interested. Message me if you are interested - more than happy to share.

Bitwig are having a summer sale for the next month and I think you can use the 8-track license to get a small discount to upgrade on top of that.

I love using VCV Rack with Bitwig. Omri did a YT video or two re integrating VCV Rack with Bitwig if you are interesting in exploring it further.
