Lovely.
Off topic, but I hope you’ve heard this, if not, you’re welcome
No I had not heard that one before. I love that guys music! That was really cool thanks!
Both this and the Space Robot Jam 2 video are enchanting. Amazing!
Wow, thank you!
So I was working in my shop and listening to music. I clicked on a Judas Priest concert, they played Metal Gods, and I decided right there I need to make a patch covering that material for a robot video! I dove into creating the song, and man, I am really struggling with it. I could play it on the guitar, but the modular approach is so much more difficult. I don’t really want to delve into the piano roll sequencer, because it gives me FOD fear of DAW. I could get nowhere with Reaper, back before VCV. Even the dum da da dum da da rhythm is more complex than you would think. It may take a week of experimenting, but I have to do this. lol
Edit: The best way forward is to use Squinky Labs Seq++ for most of the guitar parts. I guess it is a piano roll style sequencer though.
Ugh… Converting guitar tabs to piano roll is so ugh…
I uploaded the Metal Gods VCV Rack only video to youtube. This was challenging for me. I think it turned out ok. This soundscape will be used in the next Space Robots from Outer Space adventure. Yippy!
Here’s a video of one of the robots after I finished it. I used VCV Rack for the soundscape.
Here’s a little test video I made using the new Canon R50 camera. The improvement in detail and clarity are impressive. Stop action sucks, but that’s ok. lol Of course VCV used for the music.
Krautrock in space
This was a stretch for me, musically, and creatively. Very challenging. Give it a listen and report back. This took a long time to do.
I like it. Is the van flying through space a nod to john carpenter’s “dark star”? ooh, and I just noticed all those instances of Seq++!
Well done on taking on such a complex patch + video project, Jim. I think it turned out really well. I particularly enjoyed the “guitar solo”, and got a kick out of the “intergalactic kegger” reference too Lots of great, humorous details spread all over. When I saw that truck in space I immediately thought of your first tune I paid attention to (still my favorite) - “Space truckin”. Great work!
Thank you Squinky! I just like those old VW busses. I actually never saw Dark Star, but it’s dialed up for tonights viewing pleasure.
thank you Lars! There were some things I wanted to do over, but I also wanted it to be finished… haha I think maybe a Space Truckin II (stop motion video) may be a thing. Thanks again
I took an older patch, Starbase Evolution 4, and added some babbling brook sounds. I created this video using the audio from the patch. Those crazy robots…
Nice patch Jim. I’ll have to call you “the robot man” soon
In what seems like another life I was called Jim Frye the Robot Guy. I started a company in the 90’s called Lynxmotion. We created robot kits using microcontrollers and hobby servos. Bipeds, quadrupeds, hexapods, tracked and wheeled rovers, ect. I ended up selling the business to Robot Shop out of Canada in 2012 and retired. I am a robot nut. haha!
An impressive body of work, Jim ! Today we have robot vacuum cleaners and lawnmowers in a bazillion households, but back then it must have felt like true innovation. Respect!
