Expeditions in Space and Time

So here is a fun gnarly voice I’ve been working on recently:

It’s a simple monophonic 4 operator FM voice (well actually Phase modulation, not FM, because I like it)

But. . .

You have Shapemaster, for interesting and precise envelopes. You have Venom VCO unit, for the sine shaping (or other waveforms if you want) and oversampling. And you have a matrix mixer, so that any operator can modulate itself and the 3 other operators simultaneously, creating interesting algorithms.

So ignore the bottom row. In the top row, the first 4 shapes of Shapemaster are the envelopes for the 4 operators. Then with each operator, you can set the octave, the frequency within that octave, if you hit “quantize” it will quantize the frequency to the closest ratio it is at, so 3:1 ratio will be a G plus an Octave (you can check it on the VCV quantizer at the bottom). Then you can shape the wave, and set how much velocity will affect the operator (100% will allow full velocity control, and at 0%, velocity will not affect it and it will play at full volume). The 4 operator controls for Phase modulating the other operators as well as itself (feedback), this is where the fun is. And finally the mix and pan control for each operator.

I hope to improve on this, maybe make it polyphonic, eventually. Although, that would mean no more shapemaster.

But for now I wanted to share it as is. I hope others can get as much fun out of it as what I am.

Here is the patch:

4FM01.vcv (10.2 KB)

And here is the selection:

4FM01.vcvs (131.4 KB)

(note, with the selection, you would need Stoermelders Strip++ to load it otherwise you would lose the mappings.)

Replace “Twelve-Key” with a sequencer or Midi input

Enjoy. . .
