Cooler than a Theremin.

Circa 2012, but new to me.

Check the STEIM (Amsterdam) archive. They released it online for free this year! A true treasure trove.

This reminded me of Laurie Anderson’s drum dance in ā€œHome of the Braveā€, in which she, as early as 1985, wore a drum suit that turned her body into a percussive instrument.

Yeah, ā€œHome of the Braveā€ is a remarkable liveshow. My favorite is ā€œGravity’s Angelā€, featuring also a young Adrian Belew, who at that time is on a roll with King Crimson mk2:

Ok, we’ve gotta have another one from this show. This is ā€œExcellent Birdsā€ which was co-written with Peter Gabriel, who sang on the studio version:

Great song! Actually first released on the Laurie Anderson album ā€˜Mister Heartbreak’ in 1984, then re-worked and released again on the CD- and Cassette versions of Peter Gabriel’s album ā€˜So’ in 1986. Productive times .

It’s great when you get a chance to compare. I think the Mister Heartbreak version is better. Same video, slightly different instrumentation. Laurie Anderson was on a roll back then:

But the Home of the Brave version is the best. Sorry Peter

Also - check out Musikraken- an ios app that tracks hand/arm movement, facial gestures, you name it. It really works pretty much out of the box. https://www.musikraken.com/. Have used it as a modulation source. Have had less success triggering specific notes/melodies (but for that I blame my inability to ā€œdanceā€ - not the software :))

Haven’t used it yet, but the ROLI Airwave seems to go down a similar road.
