What are you listening to?

And style of singing, loved him on the first two Soft Machine records.

Oh, of course, much Genesis, Steve Hackett, Gabriel. Sad to see Phil Collins these days. Funny, I looked through my old Floyd music catalog (yes, I’m a nerd), and I don’t have ummagumma or Atom Heart Mother. I have Saucerful, More and the rest going forward, but am missing those two. I used to scour the cutout bins (even pawnshops) to complete my collections, but alas, some albums have eluded me.

I second that emotion. From a playful chap to an old man in (what seems) the blink of an eye…

That reminds me, I was listening to a German broadcast via the television when I was young and I heard something I liked, so I was waiting for the DJ to tell me what it was I was listening to…“das war die Gruppe Brand Eggs aus England”" was all I heard , ten years later I saw this album in the record store, and thought, THATS IT !

And it was…

Some great drumming from Phil on some of the tracks, and one brilliant live album …

I turned on the radio in my car recently and they were playing atom heart mother! More was my first album, so that period i’ve always liked. Atom is a little overblown and pretentious, but has its moments.

Indeed

Since the 80s? It’s 40 years :flushed:

From the moment he could not hold the drumsticks any more , when was that ?

In April 2009, Collins had surgery to repair dislocated vertebrae in his upper neck, which arose while drumming on the 2007 Genesis tour. Following the operation, he lost feeling in his fingers and could only grip drum sticks if they were taped to his hands.[263] In 2010, Collins alluded to feelings of depression and low self-worth in recent years and said he had contemplated suicide, but he resisted for the sake of his children.[264] In 2014, Collins said that he was still unable to play the drums and that it was not arthritis, but an undiagnosed nerve problem.[265] In 2015, he underwent a spine operation.[266] In 2016, he said he was still unable to drum with his left hand. His doctor advised him that if he wanted to play the drums again, he would need to practice as long as he took it step by step.

So about 10 years ago…

I figured brand-x couldn’t be far away, once we started down this path  I had all that stuff back then, not so much any more… btw, when I saw floyd they opened with “echoes”, then played all of dark side (which they were touring on).

Hey, remember collins on before and after science?

No but I loved him on Another Green World, together wit Brand X mate Percy on the bass.

Yes, I’ve been down the Brand X road, too. Robin Lumley, Morris Pert, Bruford. Seems like there were a ton of side projects and crossovers back then.

Love the more experimental tracks on here, the tape echo/delay ones ‘22.37’ in, was there a full album of such tracks by these fellows, either Soft Machine or in this guise?

Gah! I didn’t realize he worked with Eno. That’s in the serious spectrum of weird much like Robert Fripp’s working with Daryl Hall.

It was part of a deal :

Phil Collins recalled how his working relationship with Brian Eno began because Genesis owed the Roxy Music co-founder “payback” for a guest appearance.

The resulting partnership is among those featured on Collins’ upcoming box set, Plays Well With Others, which also features Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant and many others.

Asked about his first meeting with Eno during Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway recording sessions, Collins told Rolling Stone, “He was upstairs doing Taking Tiger Mountain and we were downstairs doing The Lamb. Peter [Gabriel] and some of the other guys were big Roxy fans. I didn’t count myself in the Roxy Music camp, but when it came to calling him down to sort of put some vocals through his synth, I got sent back up as payment to play on a track on that album of his. I guess we got on very well since I got lots of calls from him to do Another Green World, Before and After Science and Music for Films. They were great sessions to do, very informative as to a new and different way of working. It was a long way from Genesis.”

Speaking about minimal: you should really (i mean REALLY) gather as many friends as possible and try this:

I did a 50th anniversary performance at my birthday party in 2014 with 15 friends and it was great fun! (I played a synth, of course)

Don’t they do that one at “bang on a can” sometimes? TR is awesome, and there is a lot of his stuff available these days. I was searching in vain for “Persian Surgery Dervishes”, and it was finally released on CD in like 1996. The CD is even a transfer from an LP, I think.
