That’s kind of right, that’s why when we saw mirack, a commercial project, some people were sceptic about seeing their open source work used in a commercial way
hey vult, i purchased some of your modules today and look forward to using them over the next few weeks. Would be great to see some of your modules on the apple store - id buy them if i could chuck them into vcv ios.
Oh, got ya. Its only $7, admin fees i guess or kinda like buying a module. But why not port rack to ipad? Vcv rack would make a ton of extra development money.
this has already been adressed in the beginning of this topic. Apple store is very restrictive, and chance are it would not be profitable at all when you balance retail price and development time ( if i understood well)
I understand that, but now someone has ported vcv rack.
the first hand retail price (i.e the app purchase/ lets say similar like a cover charge intoa nightclub/bar) is not the money maker - the add on’s inside (lets say the booze, drugs) are the money makers.
Module purchases - early release small batch purchases (mi preview for example), easter egg mode purchases, subscription models, competitions.
nobody asked me either, thanks @Jon, I was coming to make that point. while Synthkit itself is permissively licensed, as is SynthDevKit (the code that does most of the heavy lifting), the graphics were not created by me, as noted in the README.
Not quite. The port based on v0.6 and it will work as-is but it is obviously a dead end. All features of v1 and future versions are missing and I guess not many plugin developers will backport their plugins.
Having such a system like this on the Apple app store is nearly impossible . Chances are Apple won’t let you have much addons or DLCs. So there would be no money maker at all.
I have to say that my love for music apps (iPad and iPhone) has faded during the last years. Maybe in the future I’ll retake it. For now I’m focusing on the hardware modules. They cost much more than an app, but they will last 10+ years.
well said! though in defence of the ipad, I am re-discovering the joy of apps by using it with midi apps and plugin it to my eurorack system through a mutan brain from hexinverter. It just saved me 1000s $ of eurorack sequencers and other controllers such as “pressure point”. Plus midi apps runs on old ipads without any problems
Firstly thank you for taking the opportunity to explain your position honestly. As it has been said already, as a community here everyone knows each other on some level, through dealing with each other with making music and conversation for the past 10 months or so here and on Facebook for more than 2 years. In hindsight it would have showing courtesy and respect to official announce the development of an iOS port of Rack beforehand and many developers who do have a non-compatible license for your port might have gladly given special permission to be able to branch out to iOS to promote the work they have done to a much wider community.
I guess as a developer myself what troubles me is the hours I spend building modules can be circumvented by legal observation but with that being said I guess it could be taken as a complement that work done is appreciate enough to not be included from a legal stand point. A business opportunity for a company like Apple to make money through opportunistic endeavours from an open source stand point goes against the ethos and spirit of open source but I guess this is why they are so successful.
As you said in a previous post the development of miRack started in early 2018 it has me curious why you have not taken the opportunity to be a member of the community and interact across all portals on some level, maybe you have been. You are obviously a very skilled developer so I hope to see your work in modules for VCV where there is a more serious user base.
On a personal level I have to respect you for taking the time to explain here your position with the project. Going forward what do you envision for the project?
I’ll reply all the comments shorty. First I’d like to share a response I got just now from Befaco:
Thanks a lot for reaching out! Really appreciated! For us its fine that you use the frontpanels design as they are. Are you, by any chance, interested in porting new befaco modules?
All the best, Manu
I believe enough has been said about miRack for iOS, so I am locking this thread. If anyone wants to discuss this further, use a different online forum. All related threads will be deleted.
It is clear that miRack helps the VCV project in no way whatsoever. Therefore, the developer needs to start from scratch on marketing, social media, and community-building rather than riding the success of VCV forums.
