There has been done no effort to make VCV rack M1 compatible, it runs Via Rosetta. So that’s not where any time have been spend in VCV world, so it makes no sense all what you are saying I regards to M1 and VCV. I have no seen any promises made to make VCV M1 compatible and not expecting it in years.
So I think this attempt at pushing the responsibility of lack of formats in VCV world over at Apple is bizarre!
Just because it says “more” and “soon” (both completely undefined) doesn’t mean “the specific format you want” and “currently in development”.
As a software developer I totally understand that VCV currently is very much still working on improvements and bugfixes across the platform. Yes a simple wrapper-AU could be done to mitigate this specific issue, but that could still require a lot of work especially if it has to be done from scratch (with Cardinal we use JUCE to make this wrapper, but since it’s a FOSS project we don’t have to buy a JUCE license etc.)
There are very few formats. Au is not something completely out there suggestion, it’s completely reasonable to expect an AU. It’s not especially hard to do. Of course it takes an effort, everything does.
It’s not that we expect miracles. Just make them and move on and have happy customers. People are not users anymore they are customers now, paying customers. Hell, maybe adding more formats will attract more paying customers
It’s part of having a business, supply a demand for paying customers.
Assuming anything taking in 0 knowledge is really not productive at all.
Especially considering the development roadmap has always been very closed and opaque I don’t see any way how you can extrapolate 0 to any useful outcome.
And sure there are paying customers, but what they bought was clear: a cross-platform VST2 plugin for intel/amd64
That’s what you should expect to get support for. Any other features/formats are extra and cannot be “assumed” or demanded.
Acting surprised that people would like an audio unit and saying “oh, do people like AU version…… we might look into that later on” is very arrogant.
I don’t agree with what you say at all.
There are several people here thinking au version would be next in list. Rather have that, than M1 compatible version. It runs pretty decent under Rosetta.
After reading all this I also think that AU is never done.
I better do not comment the developer behavior, but afterjust having contact with PayPal there is the information that I still have about five weeks to open a dispute to get my money back!
We will consider adding the following plugin formats in a future version of VCV Rack Pro: VST3, Audio Unit, AAX, LV2, and CLAP.
Each future VCV Rack feature is prioritized for all users fairly, based on feature requests sent to VCV Support. We strive to develop features and bug fixes that benefit the needs of the greatest number of customers at once, until all customer needs are met.
“Considering” adding those formats. It’s a bit vague and says nothing more than was said before.
Where can I find info about selling my license?
Cause if there are no specific plans on release of different formats, which you said there isn’t, I am sitting here with a piece of software with no value to me, cause I can just use the free version.
License transfers are not permitted by the EULA, but contact VCV Support to see if you qualify for a refund. Our refund policy can be found at VCV - Refund Policy.
We offer refunds of software only in the following situation.
If the product is demonstrated to be faulty (e.g. does not download, run, or deliver advertised functionality), you may request a refund within 3 days (72 hours) of purchase.
apple should just adopt the vst standard. it is the industry standard after all. it is open source and already works cross-platform. it would be easy for apple to do. but no, they need to be the queen of incompatibility.
if you buy apple products, you should realize you’re buying into a walled garden, and that the company purposefully makes compatibility difficult. it’s pretty entitled to then demand that third-party developers do more work to fix that problem for you.
