I have Rack2 Pro instantiated in an Ableton Live instrument rack, where the “Configure” functionality appears to have some quirks:
-
It looks as if a maximum of 8 parameters can be configured from the VCV plugin (some of my other plugins have loads of configured parameters — almost too many to see!)
-
Selecting a parameter in the “Config” mode sometimes adds more controls than just the one chosen (or intended). Occasionally these are not even located nearby the selected parameter.
-
Once added to the “configured” selection, parameters cannot be removed. (The Ableton documentation says that they can be removed by selecting them and hitting the “delete” key.)
Has anyone else experienced “unexpected results” when using the Configure feature?
Yes. I avoid recording automation in Live because it generates so much automation data, and the way automation lanes get named is confusing.
I don’t even know well it works to record and play back automation.
It’s the sort of fiddly thing where I give up as soon as it doesn’t just work. If you feel like getting to the bottom of it, be my guest. I have enough to do just to wrestle Rack into doing what I want.
Thank you! I feel your pain, for sure.
But I’m afraid that my OP was not clear, so here goes my shot at elaborating:
Rather than recording automation data in Live, I instead wish to use the Instrument Rack “configure” functionality to map VCV parameters to macros for in-performance knob twiddling.
One can accomplish this on the plugin side by first using the “configure” functionality to identify the plugin parameter to be twiddled, and then mapping that configured parameter to one of the instrument racks’ macro knobs.
For example, I’ve been able to use “configure” to map a VCV LFO Freq knob to an instrument rack’s macro – by first “publishing” it to the instrument rack itself (via the “configure” function), and then using the macro knob mapping to relate the LFO Freq parameter to a macro knob.
Seen in that way, the possibilities are a little scary – but happily Live only offers 16 macro knobs in instrument racks, so a person can’t go around mapping EVERYTHING (and thank goodness there’s a limit to the number of parameters that can be controlled).
Even still tho, it’s certainly enough to do some damage with.
UPDATE 6 July 2026:
- I can now use configure to map as many parameters as desired (although I might discover that some modules might not publish parameters to configure.
- And – thanks once again to Eric – I learned that “configure”-d parameters can indeed be deleted from the list, but the rack must have the “Configure” mode enabled in order for this to work.
I don’t know why I got stuck with the small number of configured parameters that I encountered when I first tried the procedure, but I just mapped 19 and could have easily gone on to do more.
OK!
