Using a Vocoder Module with Two External Sources for Modulator and Carrier in Bitwig

Hi. I know the basics of using vocoder modules in VCV Rack and also the Arturia Vocoder V in Bitwig. What I would like to try is using two external sound sources, one for modulator and the second for carrier, on a track. I know you have to make it an Audio track and open VCV Rack as a Fx plugin. I have tried several different things to try to get the two sounds in. Getting the vocal in is not so hard. But getting that other VST sound into VCV Rack is proving to be beyond my knowledge. And I am trying to do this in Bitwig. Any help is appreciated. Maybe there is a YouTube video on the whole subject that I have missed.

More information: I am using a microphone for the voice into the modulator and that is not a problem. I would like to try using an fm synth for the carrier but whatever I try does not work. I cannot get the audio signal from the fm synth track into the audio track and into VCV Rack.

Hi @playinmyblues! Welcome to the forum.

As far as I know, Bitwig is still pretty limited when it comes to multichannel VSTs, particularly getting multichannel inputs into them. I know that they’re aware of the feature request. Maybe it’s on deck for V6, although I don’t think it’s in the initial group of features they mentioned.

For now, you can do this: send one pair (say the carrier) using Track Output Destination; this will show up on Rack DAW channels 1 and 2.

For the second pair (say the modulator), turn it off in Track Output Destination (unless you want it to show up somewhere else) and select it in the sidechain input (weird little engine-looking thing) at the top of VCV Rack’s device panel (PRE or POST, as you like, but if you pick POST remember that it’ll be subject to the track fader, etc.). This will show up on Rack DAW channels 3 and 4.

The routing inside VCV Rack is now pretty straightforward:

I like and use Bitwig, but if you want a lot more control over I/O into Rack DAW, I’d recommend Reaper…
