OBS, Canva (for thumbnails), Shotcut, Patchstorage
OBS is nice because it encodes directly to MP4.
I read that’s risky compared to encoding to MKV: an incomplete recording would make the file useless. OBS docs recommend somewhere encoding to MKV first.
I’m lucky because life is easier on my Mac, as I read the tales from Windows users If I just want to capture a video+sound of a patch I record in Quicktime Player, routing the audio to it with Soundflower, and that’s it. The resulting .mov works beautifully in max quality on YT. Sometimes I just make a YT video from a screenshot/picture and the recorded .wav from VCV Recorder. In that case I use ffmpeg via my script to make the finished video, which is quite small. If I were to make an edited video I would record the .wav with Recorder and the video with Quicktime, edit the video part in iMovie and then glue the two together with an ffmpeg script. The recommended encoder settings for YT can be found here.
Yeah, but it only ever happens in case of a power loss: if it happens the performance is hosed all the same, so it’s not a concern in my use case.
For video codecs, H.264 remains a popular choice for its balance of quality and compatibility, especially for YouTube uploads.
When exporting for YouTube, aim for a resolution of at least 1080p if possible, and use a high bitrate to maintain audio quality, as YouTube’s compression can sometimes degrade it.
If you’re looking for a video editor that’s both powerful and user-friendly, especially if you’re using a Windows system, consider checking out some of the alternatives to Final Cut Pro. You can find a comprehensive list and comparison of options at Final Cut Pro Windows alternatives, which could help you find the right tool that fits your needs and budget
I have yet to record any VCV video, however for other software (e.g. my waveform/wavetable-generator) I have used ActivePresenter to record the middle 1900x1080 of my 43" 4K monitor, and in the past I’ve used Wavelab with (mostly) with Waves-plugins to “clean up” the audio, but have for the last year switched to iZotope RX in stead. When I get further with my VCV module-development I plan to use the same setup to do YT videos for these.
Nice to see you around these parts again! Hope you’re well, and would love to see an update of your modules for Rack 2!
Impressive work Pelle, very inspiring!
Mange tak Lars It was my first serious attempt at a C# application and learned a bunch doing so. If only I had the time, I would have liked to make again from scratch with a less “nerdy” interface, and perhaps available for OSX and Linux too. But I don’t see that going to happen. Now I’m trying to get my hand dirty wich C++ and some VCV modules.
Is YouTube the only choice for posting Videos? Does anyone use a different platform?
I asked a similar question below and got an answer - Imgur is an option
I did not know you could upload videos on Imgur
