Tides 2 AD/AR ramp modes for VCO mode?

Is there any reason to use AD or AR ramp modes for Tidal Modulator 2 set in audiorate frequency mode (top-left LED = red)?

To me it seems like those two are just useless configurations.

You can send the “click” from the audio rate envelope output to the IN port of Rings. Changing the envelope (frequency, smoothness, slope, shape, etc.) changes the tone of the sound produced by Rings. (And the difference between using the AD and AR ramp modes can be interesting as well.) Using something like MIDI velocity to affect the envelope, then, means more dynamics tones. Here’s an example patch.

Edit: Forget to say that always useful to set the SHIFT knob to something other than dead centre, and try each of the four output ports to see the subtle (and not so subtle) differences in the envelopes.

Also, if you have the frequency of the audio rate envelope at its slowest, you can use the envelope to add interest to the start of other sounds, if you trigger it at the same time as the other sound. Here’s another example patch where the Tides envelope is adding a “bite” to the start of a sound made by Plaits.

Last one. For weirdness in “one shot” AD / AR ramp modes, try patching one of the outputs back into the Clock input. Does strange things, like delaying when the envelope actually fires. :smiley:

Or clock the AD or AR at audio rates. The clock sets the frequency, and you can modulate the AD/AR rate to achieve different timbres, in addition to all the other modulation options.
