Spectral Oscillators in VCV

I’m curious if there are any VCV oscillators approaching ‘spectral balance’ functionality similar to oscillators found in the Eagan Matrix/Haken Editor (I also understand the Nord G1 had something similar and also there is Vital with its spectral wave processing). The closest I have been getting is with Lin FM feedback with a sine osc but doesn’t timbrally quite get there (as well as other more traditional analog wave shaping). Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks- I’ll have a go with these tomorrow. Yeh i am actually curious as well :slight_smile: Having scoped the Eagan Matrix Oscillators it seems like something comparable to waveshaping through feedback FM as mentioned but not quite the same sound. Perhaps the Chebyshev gets me there. Will have a listen tomorrow, thanks.

I wonder whether it is because the Haken Editor Oscillator are DSF oscillators…

never heard of DSF before. A very quick look and I can’t tell how it differs from any other kind of additive synthesis…

Maybe try CV Funk Ouros a stereo sine warping oscillator, it has more like phase distortion but great subtlety of timbres, it’s different for sure but colored a lot like additive.

The Haken Editor has no oscillators. It is just a user interface. The oscillators are in the hardware EaganMatrix device. The EaganMatrix has number of oscillators. DSF and Integrated DSF are choices. There are also the Jenny, wave bank, sine spray, sine grains, a kinetic model, …

From the manual: DSF = “Discrete Summation Formula”

The new Loris Additive resynthesis is unrelated to the DSF oscillators. It uses a bank of 96 sine oscillators driven by lookups from prepared spectral sets that can be downloaded to the EM.

Hi- yep aware of course that there are multiple oscillators (I have an Osmose). The DSF oscillators are also new to me- I’m curious about the ‘spectral balance’ inlet and how best the sounds made available by this might be approached in VCV.

EaganMatrix Module — Haken Audio

The EaganMatrix is a modular digital synthesizer invented by Edmund Eagan, utilizing a DSP engine designed by Lippold Haken.

EaganMatrix presets are edited by using an external cross-platform editing program, the Haken Editor.

The EaganMatrix Module is a full-featured EaganMatrix Sound Engine for Eurorack, and can be controlled by control voltages and/or Midi. This versatile module can act as a sound source, a sound processor, a CV source (via connection to an external Control Voltage Converter), a Midi source, or a customizable combination of all these capabilities.

Subtractive Synthesis, Physical Modelling with Modal Filter Banks, FM, Spectral Sets with Micro Analysation, including Waveguide with Feedback and Feedback Delay Networks are all at work for you here. This complex union of synthesis is what makes the EaganMatrix a unique proposition in terms of digital sonic exploration and interaction within the analog world of Eurorack.

So, it is not a one-trick pony or (multi)oscillator. Nor is it merely a collection of various discrete algorithms/models (like in various Mutable Instruments ports/clones). It goes beyond that, combining various synthesis/effects algorithms/models into more complex topologies. Also offering other functionality

Complexity is reduced by using presets, where I/O and parameters are preset dependent (comparable to the way the Mutable Instrument derived/based module work). But even these EagenMatrix presets are not fixed, but can be edited using the Haken editor.

So…on the original question:

It seems pretty unlikely to (ever) find all that functionality in a single module in VCV Rack.

But I guess many configurations/topologies/techniques could be recreated by patching up one or more modules in VCV Rack. Assuming you have knowledge of the specific EagenMatrix algorithm/topology…and adequate computing power.

So, more specifically, we would need to know the inner workings and/or the exact behaviour of the EagenMatrix ‘spectral balance’ functionality to recreate it in VCV Rack (or in any one module)…

Regarding DSF, I found this MCGill paper: Discrete Summation Formulae (DSF), which has a reference to another from James Moorer at CCRMA: stanm5.pdf. Google also turns up more stuff on the DSF oscillators.
