Shapes – Plaits’ engines, but you can see what the knobs do (free)

Hi all,

if you’ve used Plaits a lot, you know the moment: model 14, TIMBRE at 2 o’clock – what is it doing right now? Shapes runs Émilie Gillet’s open-source Plaits engine (MIT) and adds a display that names each knob for the current model (“INVERSION 48 %”), plus a live scope.

What’s different from the usual Plaits port:

  • Polyphonic: up to 8 voices from one poly cable, each with its own pitch and LPG
  • Real quantizer: 16 scales + root, FREQ and V/OCT snap together with hysteresis (FM stays free)
  • Three new bass models of our own (BASS M, DETROIT, DUB) next to the 24 originals
  • 12 presets, glide (off/30/100/300 ms), and the display shows what’s patched in and out

It’s free and an early beta, for Mac (ARM/Intel), Windows and Linux. It’s not in the Library yet (waiting for feedback), so for now you can download it from here:

I’d love to hear what you think, especially if something sounds different from the hardware or the existing port. Oliver

Is source code available?

Neat, I’ll take another plaits! Might wait a little bit in case it gets more stable, plus there’s more from other modules I have to catch up with so I’ll have time to wait for an official release in the library

once we can release on the library, I will add a link to github
