I’ve built a module called “Scatter” It’s like a little music box that has different “kits” which generate algorithmic rhythms and melody. The problem is that each kit has a very identifiable sound to it. An artists might not like the idea of using a sound generator that other artists are also using.
I was thinking of trying something new and auctioning it off, starting around $50, on eBay as an exclusive. What do you think of that idea?
Assuming a preset would consist of a folder full of files plus the little bit of json that VCV uses to locate them, why not just sell the preset packs somewhere like gumroad or patreon? Then you can let people install the plugin and either give them one or more basic kits or even none at all.
Interesting idea! But I try to be honest: I think I would stay out. Reminds me a bit of NFT business, which seem hyper-inflated. Would exclusivity be the only incentive to bid/buy?
In his defense, it doesn’t have any of the environmental costs that NFTs had, and they aren’t necessary modules, but seem super fun to have (and to flex XD).
Oh, no, I don’t mean it personal at all! Bret is such a great resource for new ideas. Just being skeptical whether the concept could actually generate revenues, and trying to envision how buyers could be enticed.
Oh, don’t worry! I didn’t take it as negative at all. I’m happy for your thoughts. You’re right in that it might not be practical. My other option is to sell it at a minimum ($10) generally, and although it might not be my most popular module, I think it’s fun and unique.
There’s also another reason why auctioning off might not make sense. If I wanted to create derivative modules using the same “engines”, that would not be fair to the original buyer. Hmm… maybe that’s a strong enough argument to ditch the concept. I’ll leave the thread open in case people want to comment though.

I can understand the thought that someone might want to not sound like they’re just “using the presets”.
But given how much of gear and software production is devoted to emulating/duplicating/reproducing the sound of distinct pieces of (typically) hardware, I would almost opine the opposite way. Once a distinctive sound gets known in the world, many people will want to use it to.
I think it’s a great idea. It’s your work and you can choose to disseminate it however you choose. You have a good following and do amazing work, so it’s not like some rando selling vibe-coded sh!t (don’t burst my bubble if you do, lol).
Just a thought, you might get a little more bang for your buck to release maybe 10 with different faceplates or something. Or not.
Thanks! I might save the idea for something a bit different and artistic. The reason is, I want to break out one of the “strumming” sounds into a more controllable module, and I don’t want to cause any friction with a buyer who considers the sound theirs to own.
But, I do kind-of love the idea of custom modules that have a specific aura around them. Honestly, I’m undecided. Usually when I’m undecided I let time pass to let the idea sink in a bit.
You could consider installing your code on a Raspberry Pi device and sell it as a unique instrument / art piece. I think you might reach a larger market and at a much higher sell price with it packaged differently. Your reputation as a legendary module designer could pair well with like some kind of artistic hardware design along the lines of what Love Hulten does.
Wow, that’s a bold claim! I can guarantee that my brain is that of a simpleton. I just love building things and won’t let my own limitations stop me. Ha ha ha. Ask me to explain the complexities of a lowpass filter, and a little bit of drool will come out of my slack jaw.
But, your idea is really great! It’s brilliant! I’ve been bitten by hardware in the past, but this was in the pre-AI era. Love Hulten’s work is new to me, but it’s inspiring. I’ll try to get that ball rolling.
