SapphireFix Challenge (April 2024)

Here is the second patch I was already working on. Very different to the first one, but again very fun to create!

Well this was a fun learning experience!

Here’s my entry on patchstorage and here’s the youtube link

I tried to make something psytrance-ish. The challenging part was having something left over to make a melody with after using the sine and palette for kick and bass, but I figured out you can use shapemaster as an oscillator so that freed up palette for some arpeggios.

Wow @Alphagem-O : Your Endagered Woods…so organic, with the bird-like chirps in the background…this one is really great with your eyes closed…beautiful pad and I love the plucky sound…sounds a bit like a morph of acoustig guitar and sitar…

You’ve seen that well. The speed button is in the negative range. And yes, I use Nucleus as an LFO. But everything is more knitted randomly. And thanks for liking my patch.

Thank you! I found rather by chance that modulating the frequency knob in Distortion (Surge XT) with an LFO can add a slight twang to the pluck. This is emphasized when mixing it with the native sound. Helps in ā€˜humanizing’ the guitar sound in this patch.

Cool tip! I’m going to try Distortion for the first time, and try this specific technique with it too.

Great patch, I like the eerie vibe! Haunting drone from Sine VCO together with the plings/bells from Palette that have their Slips probability controlled by ShapeMaster. Very atmospheric.

Wow, this is fantastic! It sounds truly cinematic. It really could be a film score.

Welcome to the forum! This patch was fun to analyze, thank you for taking on the challenge and for sharing your findings!

Nice way of shaping the pitch and volume envelope of the kick with ShapeMaster. I also like the bass from Palette and the drone from Tube Unit.

VCV 4-1 is a good way of alternating sequencers for the Palette melody. Also, clever way of automating the MixMaster faders through its Poly Mute port.

What Don said. Nice work!

So many insane patches. It’s really fun to listen to them all. Thanks Don cosinekitty :smiley_cat: for these wonderful plugins. I wish you all something really wonderful. :notes: :musical_note: :notes:

Here is another minimalist entry, again with all sounds generated by Sapphire modules. and a minimal set of additional modules used in support.

Marching To The Beat Of A Different Gong

SapphireFix Challenge Apr. 2024_Marching to the Beat of a Different Gong.vcv (12.7 KB)

Nucleus is the primary source of all sound. The gong is created by sending three triangle LFOs to the X, Y, Z inputs. One is much slower than the others, and it (actually a square wave counterpart at the same rate) resets the other two. The sharp discontinuity effectively pings Nucleus, creating the gong sound.

The Nucleus audio output is also sent to Tube Unit and Elastika for two additional voices, with Glee and Frolic providing modulation.

All 5 triangle waves for modulation, and 3 square LFOs for triggers are from ShapeMaster. It would have been easier to used CLKD for the triggers, but I decided to make the most of ShapeMaster - I have never used it before.

The Sine VCO is used as audio rate FM for the Nucleus. Random generates changing pitch values for the sine modulator. The sine is also used as ā€œnoiseā€ and sampled by S&H for use as Nucleus fundamental pitch control. I use the Bogaudio Offset as a two channel mixer to combine the FM and pitch CV into one signal before sending it to the Nucleus Speed input.

The only other source of modulation is Slips to generate pitch information for Tube Unit. Chances is used to randomly select between high and low voltage ranges. The Chances output and Slips CV are combined via Mix4 before being sent to the Tube Unit Root input.

Like it, especially the grandiose gongs and what you can do with a minimal number of voices! It all appears to be planned out well and under control.

Also, feeding the CV output of ShapeMaster back into other lanes as T/G for a kind of ā€˜stop motion’ effect is a new idea to me.

Great work!

I also enjoy the sample-and-hold modulation in this patch. I’m going to remember this idea and try it myself.

One more week to go… Create, submit, enjoy .

My last entry for this competition. What I find interesting is CTRL+R on the Sapphire Collection. It’s great fun. BTW I like CTRL nowadays…

Very cool! That’s a plethora of sounds with only 3 channels, and the speech synth from Palette fits very well into the mix. Good idea!

These clean gong sounds are very nice! I always had a hard time to get them without frequent noise waves that wipe the gong away for some time. I really like the patch!

CTRL + R is a great way to play your patch ā€˜live’ and getting lost in the everchanging variety of sounds. Nice work, much fun to play and listen!

Really well done. Sounds damn good.
