I’m not keen on the traditional DAW way of working either, but I think you just need to find a workflow that works for you. I’m still trying different approaches, but basically I see modular for experimenting/sound design, and DAWs are for arranging/finishing tracks (something I need to focus on because it rarely happens!). :laughing:

Yeah ok, that question makes more sense to me. And I’m probably not the one to answer it since staying VCV for longer isn’t a goal I have. The interaction between VCV and the DAW mostly works well for me (except for a specific sync sample-accuracy issue I just wrote about in the Stochastic Telegraph thread).

But if I did want to make entire tracks in VCV alone, the absolute timeline would definitely be the biggest missing feature. Not that there aren’t ways of making one. But something like “skip to the buildup/transition at 1:30, tweak that a little, then skip back to 1:00 and start playback there and listen to asses your changes”… yeah you get what I’m saying. Not really how most sequencers work.

@eanfran so by “audio modules” y’all mean like Audio-8 or Audio-16 right? I’m seeing audio outputs on these modules which I know can be routed to outputs for monitors, but if I’m understanding this correctly, these can be outputs for individual audio channels in a DAW yes? It would literally be just rout, record enable, then hit record and let it go. And if you have a massive patch that’s doing a lot, you would just use multiple instances of the Audio modules and rout accordingly. AND Cubase apparently doesn’t have a defined limit on how many channels you can use so THEORETICALLY, routing big ol mega patches shouldn’t be a problem (read a post where a fella was using over 1300 audio tracks).

I’m confident you can have multiple outs from at least one instance of Audio–8 (or 16), I know I did it for this hybrid song I made earlier this year. Never tried to use more than one instance of the Audio out modules, but from what I understand this should work in principle. I’ve never used Cubase, but it seems you’re correct from my research, you should be able to configure an arbitrary number of outputs from within your DAW, and VCV should be able to output to them.

That might have been me when I was preparing a live performance and was running into memory issues that bypassing didn’t solve. It turns out that even bypassed cables eat memory so I ended up loading pairs of patches as selections and deleting patches that were played to keep memory overhead under control.

To keep this relevant to the thread, here’s my workflow:

I make all my songs as patches, playable live. I then play the patches live, recording individual channels using NYSTHI Polyrec64, into their own folder. Once I am satisfied with one of my performances I import each of those channels into my DAW for mixing, and then set up instances of VCV Rack as VSTs to recreate any send effects that I have used. It’s not the most efficient since I end up renaming each file according to what it is (kick R, kick L, etc) prior to loading it into the DAW, but it’s worked for me so far.

More than 16 outputs from a single VCV instance in a DAW is not possible as far as I know. But you can have more than one VCV instance. :slight_smile:
