Patch challenges?

Hi all

There used to be a regular (approx monthly) patch challenge on this forum a few years ago.

Does anyone know if anything similar exists, either here or elsewhere in synth land?

Thanks, Chris.

Sure you are welcome to set up a patch challenge here if you like. I think it’s mostly up to someone to organize/moderate it, and to drum up excitement and interest in it. We had a few months run with a patch challenge a while back, but I think when holiday season came it interrupted the cadence.

KVR Audio has their long running One Synth Challenge. Currently at its 207th edition

In VCV Rack this could translate to a One Plugin or Brand or Dev challenge. But since in modular the ‘synthesizer’ is broken down into its components (generators, modulators, effects) you would need at least one soundgenerating Module to create any sound at all.

But Challenge criteria might be based on any other constraint e.g.:

  • a maximum number of modules
  • a fixed selection of modules/plugins
  • some specific synthesis technique
  • recreate/emulate of some sound or track
  • only use modules outside of their intended use
  • etc

Generally, working under constraints promotes creativity and deeper knowledge/understanding of whatever lies within the boundaries of the constraints.

Many thanks for your response kw!

I didn’t know about the KVR challenge. Looks really fun (though obviously some serious competition in there). I quite enjoy song covers so may do some more of those on here.

Absolutely agree about constraints - hence my interest in this. The breadth of stuff out there can be pretty bewildering otherwise.
