Passive Bandpass Filters

Just looking at the new Audiothing plugin. Is there any difference in response or sound quality between active and passive bandpass filters? I’m wondering if we can make something that sounds the same in Rack, and if there’s anything special about a passive circuit, or whether we can just use any filter and emulate the jumps in frequency created by the octave switching.

A passive bandpass filter is a simple circuit. Which makes it a good case for component level emulation.

In practice you can just use normal bandpass filters. They won’t sound the same, but they’ll do the job.

The point of passive filters is they sound good, different than the resonant filters we’re used to.

You can get the UAD Massive Passive plugin for $49 now which is based on a really good passive EQ. As with any plugin, you need VST Host, but that opens up a whole world of modulation possibilities.

Or you can get the Audiothing Octaves for $19 right now.

Also there’s the RackWindows Baxandall, the same classic passive tone control circuit used for EQ in stereo equipment.
