Offset modulation?

I was messing with LFO modulation and just decided to make it audio rate to see what it sounded like.

So this patch has a sine wave which is processed by Offset to be 50% scale and offset by ±5v. The offset is then modulated by the LLFO by way of uMap.

Is this just ringmod? It sounds different to a typical ringmod to my ears…

When you modulate the offset with a saw, it sounds to me like you get the two frequencies together.

Interestingly, if you modulate with another sine it doesn’t really change the sound (or maybe it does but my ears don’t work that well)

Anyway, not a great revelation or anything, just thought it was interesting…

If I understand everything right, you are just summing two signals. So, not too different from just using a mixer. But that’s a very cool roundabout way to do that

Hmmm, yes I think you are right, it is adding the two signals rather than multiplying them…

So not ringmod

The sine wave is scaled to 50% by the Offset module scale param, and the LLFO modulator wave is scaled by the uMap scale param so that the Offset module adds ±5v

Add ±2.5v sine to ±5v modulator and result is ±7.5v

Totally makes sense now, thanks

That technique of mixing by way of offset CV is built into Venom VCO Unit and VCO Lab.

VCO Unit has an offset input with attenuator (attenuverter).

VCO Lab has 5 offset inputs with attenuators (attenuverters) - one for each of the four wave forms, plus one for the mix.
