No sound on Mac Air

Hello, I’ve been trying to build my own patch on VCV Rack for an assignment but I haven’t been getting any sound for some reason. I have the Audio-8 module set as built in output and I’ve been playing around with the other modules to try and get something, but nothing’s working. Please help if you know a solution !!!

Hi @hannahyun1999 and welcome to the forum. At a first glance, I can’t see anything wrong with your patch. I don’t know much about Mac OS though.

I’m moving your post to the more appropriate “VCV Rack” category where someone will hopefully help you :crossed_fingers:

(forum tip/reminder for everybody: by clicking the pencil icon you can edit titles and content of your posts by yourself, should you ever need it)

Can you click on the device selector (where you have Apple inc : built in right now) and try some other options ? Let us know if you manage to make it work, we are here if you need some more help

Hi, I’ve tried using the built in microphone option but my screen just keeps freezing

I see, what i find weird is that on the picture you posted, neither the inputs or outputs seem to be active (no little green dot lit). I wonder what could be going on, let’s hope someone here with a Mac has an idea

I don’t think you’ll ever want to select your microphone, as that is an input device; the main thing you want here is to select your output device. Presuming you don’t have an external audio device hooked up, you’ll either want speakers or headphones. It may be useful to try both. If you’re still not having luck, you could try saving your patch and re-opening the default patch, just to get your audio issue solved first. If that works, but similar settings don’t work in your patch, you could try uploading your patch file here (or sharing a link to it after uploading to patchstorage.com), so someone with a working setup could help troubleshoot.

By way of affirmation, I find my Mac to be somewhat temperamental with VCV Rack. It is sometimes necessary to close and reopen the application to get things working, especially after selecting a different audio device. A full restart of my machine isn’t usually necessary, but you may want to try that, if simpler methods don’t work. Also, to avoid performance issues, you may want to close all other applications, particularly your web browser, if possible.

Also, welcome to the forum.

Can confirm that since I’m on Catalina. Had some dropouts where I didn’t get any sound out of Rack. And I knew the patch worked before…

Im not Mac specialist but I dont think the micro will work , you should use speakers

Check if you really chose the Built-in output in the Audio-8 module. We can’t see that in the picture. As @Olival_Clanaro says the green light above input 1 and 2 should be lit. This will not be when you choose the Built-in input and that will not work.

Like I said. This happend to me to, since I’m on catalina. Just didn’t give much attention. Restart Rack, if that doesn’t work. Restrt your mac, if This doesn’t work create a new template.
