Mutable Instruments Beads code

The Mutable Instruments github has been updated with Beads, thanks to Emilie

Apparently someone forced her hand by trying to publish AI generated ā€œreverse engineeredā€ slop.

Grateful that she did and bless her hard work!

Does this mean it could be ported to VCV now, or would that require separate agreement?

We still need Edges, that one somehow has not been ported yet

@hemmer and/or @Bloodbat ?

A polyphonic Mutants port of Beads would be amazing @Bloodbat - if possible!

I use the Mutants Etesia all the time, it’s my favourite version of Clouds

Looking forward to the coming ports, clones, and alternative firmware options.

It will also be interesting to look at the code for the different quality settings. The scorched tape setting could be a module on its own, kind of like a Chase Bliss Gen Loss, or the ChowDSP tape modules.

It is open source now, MIT licensed. Free to be used, with attribution, as long as the names ā€œMutable Instrumentsā€ and ā€œBeadsā€ are not used.

I don’t have capacity to do this ā€œby handā€, but if you are willing to accept largely Codex assisted development I’ve had a punt at it on my local fork for my own curiosity mainly. Please don’t ask for this to be submitted to the library, doing so would represent a lot of work for Andrew and the team, and I don’t want to make anyone review AI generated code. I’m still testing it myself, quite early days, but happy to share beta builds (see below). I am very happy to receive feedback / bugs etc and will try to update when I find time.

There is also Particules by @gabe.roth which did a great job of this pre-firmware release, and will likely update too? GitHub - gabriel-roth/RobotBoy: Modules for 4ms MetaModule and VCV Rack Ā· GitHub

Thanks @hemmer! Particules (in the Robot Boy plugin) has already been updated to use the Beads source in the beta versions: Release Robot Boy 2.2.0 beta 4 Ā· gabriel-roth/RobotBoy Ā· GitHub

I split the Beads functionality into three parts: the core granular texture synthesizer (in Particules), the hidden delay mode (in Retours), and the wavetable oscillator (in Ondes), plus the Lucarne visualizer expander. It’s more usable in VCV and MetaModule than cramming it all into a single module imho.

The original version of the plugin is still awaiting VCV library approval but you should use this beta if you want the actual Beads sounds. Hit me up here or on Github with any issues.

Awesome, looks great, and that’s a good way to have it set up, the delay is another beast completely and worthy of its own module. :exploding_head: Hopefully these are complementary ports/projects (one sticking to original UI as close as possible, one prioritising usability/UX etc). You’ve clearly spent a lot longer on yours so is probably a better starting point!

Hoping for an ā€œAudible Instrumentsā€ version but this will do since I gotta get in on the beads action and it looks so eerily accurate…so long as it updates and is stable enough I’ll go with this version for now and hopefully something beads will come to the library

Definitely grabbing this too, wavetable oscillator hiding in the beads just got me even more interested… probably gonna have to check the other modules in case this hits the library and there’s more to discover for me

Kicked the tires, nothing blew up, so so far so good! At simple testing seems to work as it should. Will report anything that breaks or doesn’t work as it should. Thanks for that!

Great idea to break out the various ā€˜modes’ into separate modules. Thanks for those!

Quick test and all I have seen so far is that the Wavetable synth (Ondes) aliases quite badly, and all low frequencies seem to be missing due to that. I see the aliasing hump on the Analyser, but nothing in the low end to be heard, only the higher frequencies. Is that as it should be,?

Thanks for the report! I think this is two separate issues:

  1. The Beads source doesn’t have any anti-aliasing, and I didn’t add any, so the brighter waves will pick up some noise at higher frequencies. If you’re running VCV at 44.1 kHz it’ll be worse than hardware Beads, which runs at 48 kHz.
  2. A lot of the waves in the Beads wavetable don’t have much of a fundamental, so it’s easy to end up in a situation where there’s no audible low end — including the default settings for Ondes. If you turn Position all the way to the left, you should hear more low end; let me know if that works?

I’ll consider (a) adding anti-aliasing as a context-menu option; (b) changing the default setting so we start from a sine wave.

OK, let me fill in the missing info here: MacOS arm64, Rack 2.6.6 running at 96kHz.

Will report back after futzing with it some more. The worst one were waves 1 and 2 (well, bank 1 and 2 I guess  with position roughly at 50% )

is that and AND or an OR?

I tweaked things a good bit, and also added @hemmer 's port of Beads with Plaits being in Wavetable Oscillator mode as replacement for Ondes. They seem to behave pretty closely, though tuning the Beads granulator settings is a bit hard as they use different ranges of numbers. But I think I got close.

No breakage or implosions to report on either so far.

Here is the comparison patch, no recording, just the patch:

FG_R2_637_05_RobotBoyAudibleInstrumentsBeads_Fun.vcv (13.3 KB)

Another version of Beads for VCV is in beta:

While working on my dub techno suite, Emilie Gillet released the source code of Beads. So I built Texture on her original engine and added what I missed: a display that shows every grain as it plays across a tape loop, 8 presets to start fast (Cloud, Haze, Frozen Pad, Dust…) and four quality modes from clean to worn.

Free for Mac, Windows and Linux. Early beta, so feedback is very welcome. Download here → thoow.com

Once we are out of beta I would love to make it available from within the VCV Library

AND lol. I made both changes, they’ll be in the next release. Thanks for testing!
