Memory Ensemble offset playhead relative to recording head phase

Hi!

I am trying to figure out how to offset a playhead in Memory Ensemble by @StochasticTelegraph that keeps in phase with the recording head. So the playheads are always delayed relative to the present time/last recorded input.

The offset (by changing the voltage in the set input) is only done in a fixed 0-10V grid. But when live recording, the recording head moves as well in this grid. When I want to re-adjust the offset (and therefore changing the delay of the playhead) it goes out of phase with the recording head: 0V does not align with the position of the recording head. The phase signal into the set input does not work as well, since it is moving constantly. Is this even possible? Any clues or hints are welcome!

If you set the INITIAL knobs to two different values and then play both heads in tandem, then they should keep a set distance apart. But do you want something that does this even when the record head starts and stops?

Posting a bare bones demo patch here and stating what happens and what you wished happens might de-confuse me.

I worked on similar things five hours ago! My solution looked either like this:

Send the read head phasor out to a short delay and hetrick phasor analyzer (in any order). The reset output will sync up the read head slightly behind the rec head whenever the rec goes back to the beginning of the memory. If you don’t want it to happen every time you just stop the trigs from going through somehow.

Or like this:

Whenever you want to resync the heads, send a trig to the sample and hold.

The thing to note here is that the “set” inputs only do something while their inputs are moving. You can use continuous voltage to scrub along, but I find it more useful to send a trig or other short signal that ends on the value I want. After that, if the other settings (speed, bounce, rev) are reasonably set up, stuff stays in sync.

That looks promising! I am trying to find a way to scan through the buffer, but with the option to go back to the present (recording head), either with a button or automated. This will do it I think. I will try it out today, thanks!

Yes it works. Many thanks!

I am creating a version where you can scroll through the buffer live in a less glitchy way and where you can set the scanning resolution in voltage steps. I will post the patch later this day for a proof of concept

Cool! Sounds like the latter suggestion should work then.

Such things can be done very conveniently, synced to tempo and with excellent sound quality with “It’s good cholesterol”

Here I demonstrate the monophonic use (with one playhead), to get “gross beat”/“timeshaper” type of modulation.

It’s very good cholesterol, and it has a really good user manual, too.

Here is the patch… It works pretty nice!

SCANNiNG BUFFER_PoC.vcv (5.4 KB)

Yes I am aware of this module, it is great!

But the advantage of the Memory Ensemble is that it can handle way longer buffers  And from time to time I like to figure stuff out the hard(er) way.

Cool! I like both of these.
