The title says it all…i need to make my voice sound like a robot and I’m getting nowhere. I’ve done this in e.g., Ableton, with various plugins but not yet in VCV rack. I don’t have the pro version so I can’t use vsts. Any good suggestions?
Did you search the library for “Vocoder”?
Here’s a simple vocoder patch:
Speak into your microphone and play notes on your computer keyboard. (Headphones recommended to avoid feedback!)
If you want a vintage robot sound (like the Dalek voice in the old dr Who series), use a ring modulator:
Your voice = carrier
A sine VCO (audio rate) = modulator
Adjust to taste.
Excellent! That will definitely be worth a try!!
Thanks for the patchwork–I honestly had it all wired up wrong for Surge Vocoder ![]()
So here is one option I came up with–and yes I searched for Vocoder…but then I just searched for “Robot” and found ToneCarver’s module. With a few effects–I can get a responsive voice with a lot of options to play with. And the “freeze” button is kinda fun to make it sound like the robot’s brain is glitching (just like mine does!):
I made video about using a vocoder
If you hadn’t moticed, todays robot voices are pretty much indistingushable from humans. But we know what you mean. Of course, one can also mimic a “robot” ref Flight of the Concords.
For added fun, try and use SAM to speak into the vocoder.
Yeah I tried that–what a hoot!! But, in this case I needed a “vocal costume” for a performance…I have to “be” a robot ![]()
I know right–it’s kinda unsettling… But, I needed a kind of old-school sci-fi B movie kind of robot sound ![]()
