Hey y’all
I’m looking for a VCV Rack sound designer who wants to collab on a music live performance project. Ideally with a raw analog retro-futuristic techno/rave/IDM sound. (But it doesn’t have to. I love music and appreciate many genres, so depending on your taste, it could go in a different genre direction.)
Context:
I’ve been working on a hobby project that is a music live performance software which is doing a lot of real-time MIDI processing/orchestration and then sends the MIDI out into a DAW over a virtual MIDI port to render that MIDI stream into an audio stream using synths.
To get an idea of what the software does, here is a video demonstrating an older version of the software from some years ago (it wasn’t using VCV Rack back then):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jcl1axQVvY
(I had decided to do the performance on short notice for a competition, I only had 24h to do everything, so I didn’t have time to do proper sound design, hence the Nintendo soundfont Also, this video doesn’t demonstrate the full possibilities of the software, and it has evolved a lot since then…)
That project was paused for some time because I was busy with life, but I recently revived it, with a new artistic vision that I’m very excited about.
Now my plan is, instead of using soundfonts, to use VCV Rack for the MIDI to audio step and postprocessing/mixing, for a great live sound that sounds as good as playing a record (nobody would dance to a thin soundfont sound ).
I’ve done some music production before, but I’m not the best sound designer or mixing engineer, and currently I’m mostly focused on finishing implementing the MIDI processing / transformations (and MIDI controller integrations), so I’m looking to collaborate with another artist who wants to be part of this project, who would focus on the sound design & mixing.
With this project, one of the goals is to push the state of the art of what’s possible with live performance. (E.g. doing novel computational compositional transformations of the source MIDI material at runtime. It’s not just “DJing with MIDI songs”, there are a lot of musically interesting transformations & song transition methods that become possible in MIDI that aren’t possible in the audio domain when DJing with song recordings. Live reharmonization, live mashups/remixes, pivot chord song transitions using computed smooth voice leading with chords as points in high-dimensional orbifolds etc. Integration of hardware synths or human instrument players playing some parts instead of the synths, live-streaming the MIDI as real-time sheet music to iPads in front of orchestra players…) Also I’m gonna integrate my ILDA RGB Laser, DMX stage lights / fog machine, and real-time shader music visualization. (I wrote a companion music visualizer software (https://shaderboi.net) that takes the MIDI stream in, sends it via a texture to a shader, and the shader then visualizes the music in a maximally synæsthetic way together with the laser.)
Then I’ll record myself (or a collaborator) performing in front of a greenscreen (like in that YouTube video above) and place that footage into the 3D scene and render it in equirectangular projection for 360° VR recording, with musical elements being visualized as 3D objects in that space, and using ambisonic audio, rendering each musical element’s sound at the location where it is visible in the 3D space.
(And so, later I’ll also be looking for an ambisonic audio mixing/mastering engineer, for the audio of this 360° VR music live performance video recording that I want to upload to YouTube. And not just one, I’ll continue doing live performances, this is a long-term artistic project. The goal is to combine a retro-futuristic 90s rave sound with highly-immersive hyper-futuristic live-visuals for a multimodal, maximally synæsthetic experience that is interesting to listen to, engaging to watch, fun to dance to, and semiotically interesting to analyze, with many musical influences coming together here.)
I’m looking to explore the synergy with someone who is into similar forward-thinking concepts and wants to push the state of the art
You can also express yourself creatively in this project, the artistic vision is not “set in stone”, it’s just my current vision, but it’s completely open to collaboration and evolution. It can even go in a different direction (or multiple), e.g. ambient, dub techno, IDM, liquid DnB, catchy noise music, harmonic walls of sound etc. After all, the MIDI material (being essentially digital sheet music) is very flexible, it can be rendered in any genre/style, and with any instrumentation. We can encode different genre cliches/styles and even transition between them during a live performance.
Later I also plan to bring in a visual (shader) artist who can bring their own creative vision to this project. (But the music has to be there first, nobody wants to see a live performance with only visuals ).
(When my software is fully ready to record live performances with the new artistic vision, I also plan to post on social media. I know the memetic landscape and how the algos work, so I expect I can generate a good number of views across different platforms, and have youtuber friends who are good at making viral videos and know many people in tech/art/music. This project will be a great showcase for our ideas and creativity, and it’s more fun to collab than do everything by myself )
So yeah, if you’re interested in working with me on this project, focusing on the sound design / mixing (first non-ambisonically (normal stereo), for real-world live performance and recording of it),
please DM me!
Looking forward to hearing from you
Even if you’re not interested in collaborating, please let me know what you think of this artistic vision (after reading all this ), I’m curious
