And I bought a new computer to run win 10/11 when support for Win 7 went away. Win 7 was getting to be a problem anyway - there was some software I wanted to run that didn’t support Win 7.
Yeah, and soon (this year, 2025), Windows 10 will run out of support. Also forcing many users to upgrade (replace) their hardware.
Annoying, since most machines will technically keep functioning just fine in most common use cases, for many more years. And many more years when moving to a less demanding OS like Linux.
Anyway…
Panta Rei. Change is constant and such…

I am glad that the VCV Rack 2.6.2 has a bug. In other words, VCVrack will fix this problem in next release. And I’m glad that I don’t have to switch to another OS. My whole studio is built around Win7 and I cannot easily switch to another system.
My applications don’t need updates. These applications are as they are.
Never touch a running system.
I am surprised that there are no other people here with the same problem.
Except for VCV? I understand your conundrum, but don’t understand your logic. At a certain point, VCV will fall into the category of (most? all?) your other software. Un-updatable.
I know quite a few people with old boxes and installs of Protools. Just keep that thing air-gapped until the next century!
Yes. Varies from OS to OS and the software involved, of course.
I lost a hard drive a few years ago when I failed to check this and let my ‘Adobe box’ phone home. Very old (but paid for and legally installed) illustrator and photoshop instances which work perfectly fine for my needs. But it would throw a fit trying to communicate with Adobe.
Anyway, it somehow overwrote the master boot record and borked the whole drive. Lost a lot of data, sigh.
