Inline cable attenuators

For my hardware modular, I sometimes use inline volume controls for attenuation. I prefer these to attenuator modules because they don’t take up any rack space.

While rack space is not a concern in VCV, I still find myself wishing I could right-click on a cable and attenuate whatever is going through it, without having to add an attenuator module to the rack.

This feature has been requested several times. Why don’t we have it today? Because it is more complex than it looks at first glance.

Assuming the Rack already has this feature, changing the attenuation value will be immediately.

On an audio signal, you will get a click sound, and to avoid that, the value change must be smoothed out.

On a CV signal, this smooth might result in unwanted effects.

So at the end, for every cable you will need something like a knob or slider for the attenuation and an option switch for the type of data (audio or CV).

In a large patch, this produces more unwanted CPU load, so you would be better off by using dedicated attenuator modules.

A good alternative is using a poly module like Poly Offset by Bog. You can easily attenuate lot of signals with one module.

Many thanks for the education!
