I'm thinking of getting a 4ms Meta Module

Would love some feedback for those of you who have used one. My main concern is that it doesn’t seem like there are many modules from the VCV Rack Library that are included for the Meta Module according to the list on the 4ms site. Though there are some really good ones in there too.

Are you happy with it overall?

Thank you!

Greg

Had one since release and hugely impressed with it. Dan and the team are really dedicated to developing the module and it already has an excellent community around it.

Would recommend getting the Wi-Fi module though as it makes transferring patches from VCV absolutely seamless.

If you haven’t already, worth taking a look at https://forum.4ms.info/ to see all the activity, community, development etc. I use mine a) to build small sub patches, like this (CPU means you still have limitations), b) prototype possible module ideas, c) have hardware equivalents (e.g. mutable series) on tap.

May 2026 here. Got mine this winter and despite previously not loving VCV rack…. I love my current setup. Most of my focus is still around making bridges to my hardware… I will come up with some patch idea where Meta is an instrument that has a lot of inputs and outputs (I have the buttons, AIO and WiFi modules) and I arrange my physical rack around that “instrument”. Like yesterday’s experiment was taking in an external VCO wave from XPO and multiplying it into 2 wave folders and filters that I will build into a Make Noise Jumbler mix that I’ll send to my external FX. I also use the MIDI port extensively with my Oxi E16 / One to control all the knobs in pages of menus on the E16 (I’ve had maybe 48 mapped a couple times). When all wired up it all feels very natural and responsive. I wish that it had double the processing capability since I can’t really run anything at 96K (CPU % will double if they do) and some more inefficient modules will bog it down - ie not work - but after a couple months I have my go to modules (Bogaudio always works efficiently) so I don’t have to search and test them. The meta / VCV formula has been great if you’re into experimentation. Last purchase was an XPO. I weighed whether to use VCV for VCOs but spent the $300 on a module.

Friend of mine ultimately only uses it as a mixer so he has stereo sends / 6 channels and uber CV possibilities.

If you use vcv extensively, get a second hand MM and try it. I got one myself and like others say it’s about making small patches, in my case generative sequencers like venom rhythm explorer and touring machines etc. It can do a lot but in my opinion it’s best to keep it simple and try to have knob per function as much as possible because otherwise you might as well use VCV with DC couple outputs and inputs etc.

One really cool thing about having a MetaModule in my rack is that the USB C port on the front of it can connect right to a Keystep Pro, and even power it! So now when I power on my rack I immediately have a 4x-poly keyboard with Ouros loaded up.

The other patch I use a lot is just a Tuner patch, with Tuner and Scope modules.

If you have enough discipline to keep a standard IN/OUT port assignment in the patches you make, then you can even save/load different patches and not have to mess with the cables.
