How would I set up the VCV plugin to work with Ableton’s cv devices (CV Shaper CV LFO CV Envelope Follower, etc.) and modulate parameters using Live’s cv tools before putting the modulation signal back to VCV? (Like modulate a Plaits’ morph parameter with the envelope follower, mix two LFOH! devices from Ableton and modulate a Clouds module) I want to be able to use some of the interesting Max 4 Live devices with VCV but I’m unsure where the cv goes in and out cause I’m only familiar with using it as a midi instrument, sending midi from other tracks, self contained patches, etc. and wanted to expand my rack with Ableton
I don’t think the CV devices are the way to go for that. I believe they really are strictly for use with hardware modular through a DC coupled audio interface.
You could instead just map the parameter through the VST configure option in Live and modulate that. Or, if you want to have the modulation as CV in Rack, you can add a CC Control device to the track and a MIDI CC > CV module to the Rack instance. Then you can use it like any other CV.
I was thinking it would work since VCV has cv but if the only option is just the one I’d already go with then I’ll just stick to that. Maybe it could accept through an audio in module and there being some sort of virtual interface or skipping the interface step directly?
Yeah, I was trying that as well when starting out with VCV/Live. But VCV does not really have CV as such. It’s a simulation of it. So there will have to be a conversion at some point.
If I understand your intentions correctly, I would really look into mapping the modulation to a CC Control device (or multiple) and the using MIDI CC > CV in VCV Rack. That gives you 119 CVs that you can freely use via cables.
I have used this with some very cool M4L devices. Now, getting CV out of VCV should be possible in a similar fashion, I have not actually done that so far, though.
Yeah, I wanna use the crazy M4L modulators and processors and there’s also the modulators in bitwig too, the grid is full of modular possibilities and being able to merge that with VCV is another great idea
