Homage to vintage synths in VCV Rack

minimoog

Following the VCV release of the beautiful set of modules from synthesizers.com, I entertained myself joining them together to make a functioning synth that behaved like a minimoog, then posted it to “The new collection from Synthesizer.com” in the “Plugins & Modules” category. After seeing ScreenSlave’s “ARP Odyssey” homage interface, I decided my Minimoog would be better if it’s interface was “just like” the real thing. Here it is.

It behaves quite a lot like the real thing and is fun to play with. The main differences from earlier postings are the addition of Presets and the re-working of the interface to follow the Minimoog hardware layout (less functional in VCV than my original, but vastly more beautiful).

Module collections (all free) required for the patch are:

Please feel free to improve on the patch and/or make your own homage to a classic synth in VCV Rack.

I haven’t tried it myself, but is the synthesizers.com filter really “the moogiest” filter out there? There have always been some pretty good ladder filters out there for VCV, so just curious.

I’m sure it isn’t. Along the route of putting this together I found, for one thing, there is no self-resonance in the filter, so it won’t work as an audio source without the oscillators, unlike the Minimoog. I did quickly rig up the ability to switch different filters in and out to listen to the results, but soon realised that the project would never end if I didn’t set some artificial parameters. This was as much about aesthetics than anything else!

Last I heard this one was deemed the “moogiest”: VCV Library - LindenbergResearch Alma 24dB/oct Ladder-Filter.

This one was supposed be be good, too: VCV Library - Mockba Modular Filtah

I was myself a little disappointed. My “Stairway” was supposed be be moogish if you don’t use all the crazy features, but ppl didn’t think is was good for that: VCV Library - Squinky Labs Stairway. Mind you ppl seem to like that filter, it’s just not very moogish.

The dotcom filter is absolutely lush and analog-y and I use it as part of an analog synth in whatever patch I am starting that wants some vintage synth goodness. Your filters are quite nice, but are not instant vintage synth like the dotcom.

I’d like to see a version of the Q150 Ladder Filter

I haven’t tried the dotcom one yet, I would agree the Lindenberg one is quite Moog-ish but unfortunately it’s premium now, which means it’s not a great choice for a patch you’re planning to share. My favourite analogue sounding choice is Cytomic, but that’s also premium and modelled on one of the Jupiter filters so quite a different sound. Have to say I quite often prefer cleaner, less vintage sounds anyway so my opinion isn’t very useful on a thread about a Moog emulation!

This is great - I love what you did with the presets and the notes for each voice. I will be stealing that idea :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yes! I totally agree with @ScreenSlave - beautiful job of implementing presets with dynamic documentation.

I haven’t any idea how close your patch sounds to the physical hardware, but I like the sounds regardless - This is an exquisite patch!

You might consider editing your initial post and changing the category to Music & Patches. The Lounge category is more for a place for community members to post about things not necessarily related to VCV Rack. But your patch is a beautiful representation of what can be done with VCV Rack

I so much like your dynamic preset labels, I already stole the idea and added it to my
Roland JX-8P & PG-800 emulation. I don’t have notes for each preset, so my job was much easier.

I’m a fan

In other words, just wanted to say this is sooo well done. The preset system with the labeling is so cool - and generally, it’s effortless to store your own tweaked versions of the presets with the 8face. Seeing this labeling etc. catching on is great (like @DaveVenom just did there, great job on these emulations too btw)

You’re welcome. I stole from you first! PS I just replaced the download file. There are labels on the Range and Waveform knobs now, which take the guessing out of it. Knowledge of the Moog waveforms is necessary to interpret my hieroglyphs.
