Different envelopes from a single recording

I’m working on percussive recordings using tube and contact microphones. I enjoy generating envelopes from the audio material and then using them in VCV in various ways. I’m looking for suggestions on how to derive envelopes that are correlated to the input material. Currently, I’m using patches such as:

  • simple envelope followers
  • envelope followers placed after modules like Sunder or Yoko, which split the signal based on frequency and amplitude
  • comparators to generate gates for use with envelope generators like ADSR, Rampage or the recent Envelope Factory

Any other suggestions?

My CVfunk modules offer some options you might play with. You can try FlowerPatch, it does some FFT analysis to find the top frequencies and their intensities, and outputs that in poly. Or try Tuner, set it to high update, and you can track a single frequency in v/oct.

Or if you want an envelope follower, my Triton filter outputs an envelope for each of the three bands, and a global envelope as well.

Thanks!

I’m also trying a very interesting module, the Informer by Valerio Orlandini.

Maybe very useful for generating video

Oh, wow, I’ve totally slept on this module of yours! I thought it was purely visual. Those outputs sound super useful. Cheers!

from the Flower Patch manual:

Jacks

  • IN: audio input. Left and right are averaged.
  • OUT f: V/oct of the six strongest peaks, as a 6-channel poly cable.
  • OUT A: the amplitude of each of those peaks, matching channel for channel.
