>> call for submissions: Drone Day 2025 collab <<

Save the date: Saturday, May 24th, 2025

If you’re reading this, you probably already know about it: a collective collaboration dedicated to ambient/drone music.

The idea is to gather contributions from anyone willing to participate: VCV Rack, hardware/modular instruments, DAWs, your singing, field recordings, and so on…basically…whatever.

Everything will be assembled and mixed into one piece by me, as @ablaut used to do in the past.

I don’t have a specific theme in mind, but I’m imagining something dense yet minimal, kind of static or very slowly evolving, with a touch of melody emerging from noisy sources (don’t worry too much about that last part — it will be my pleasure to take care of it!).

Mono or stereo uncompressed WAV/FLAC files, 48kHz (or higher)/24-bit, will be greatly appreciated. VCV patches are welcome too, as well as CV/modulation sources in selection format — just please stick to free modules.

I guess most of the material will be processed (stretched, pitched, reverberated), so there’s no need to send clean or finished tracks.

Please don’t send lots of short samples; it will be much easier for me if I can start from a few long-ish audio stems.

I hope there will be no perceived rhythm — except maybe the listener’s own breath.

I don’t have a specific duration in mind, feel free to send audio files between 1 and 15 minutes long.

Deadline: May 21st, dinner time, wherever you are in the world.

Please include the name you would like to appear in the credits.

Send via WeTransfer or similar → ale47p at hotmail dot com

Let’s create an atmosphere. Let’s surround the listeners and tell them an untold story.

Awesome that this tradition will continue! Is there a prescribed scale?

@ale47p.
great to see that you’re continuing the drone day tradition!
I would also suggest to set at least a certain scale and maybe something like a guiding theme (e.g. “cloudy skies”, or maybe “lone path” or …)

+1 for a scale!

ok for the scale

B C# D E# F# G in just intonation, but with a reference of A=428 instead of 440 Hz

let’s start one octave below, so root B = 240.75Hz

B = 1/1 = 240,75 Hz
C# = 9/8 = 270,84 Hz
D = 6/5 = 288,9 Hz
E# = 45/32 = 338,55 Hz
F# = 3/2 = 361,13 Hz
G = 8/5 = 385,2 Hz

if you don’t want to care about this stuff just use this selection

quantize_2025_collab.vcvs (1.9 KB)

just feed the VCV quantizer module “1V/oct pitch input” on the left with your voltage and get it back at the bottom right “Signal output” of the Bogaudio OFFSET module

let’s circle around a couple of octaves up and down, but it’s not mandatory of course. if you feel like going microtonal/dissonant/pitch bending it will be fine, expecially on the tritone and the minor 6th (E# and G)!

just unmute the patch and hit run on Clocked and let it drone for some minutes :wink:

And another.

Needs 30 seconds or so more like 1 minute for the patch to ‘warm up’.

Cheers! Fun project to use a scale/tonality that’s outside my usual box.

I had not actually heard of this before, great idea! Here’s my patch, I hope it hits the spot:

nice! I think you attempted a parallel compression on the master but I think on my system it will work better with just one AUDIO module, not two, so that’s the only think I’m going to fix :+1:

The second audio module is a blackhole module for Instagram recording so it is indeed dispensible. I added the compression to try to tame some peaks from the interjections, but I don’t know if it was successful. Thanks for wrangling this!

Thank you so much, @ale47p , for keeping the tradition of Drone Day alive! Here is a simple patch. I hope it meets your requirements and would be happy if you used some of it in your compilation.

Hydrogen Drone (Drone Day 2025, 4VE04)

Generative ambient drone created for the Drone Day 2025 collab. Conceived as a 4-voice exercise. Maximus-VST (Image Line) in Host-FX (VCV) was used as compressor for loudness during recording, but removed from the patch thereafter.

A second contribution, I hope it’s within spec :slight_smile:

Some modules need a couple of seconds to sync with the clock.
