anyone working on a shimmer reverb for vcv

Seems like this is a must have

Have you looked into clouds or any of the granular synthesis mods? They might be a good starting place for you to experiment

Try the forum search function. I made one years ago using Plateau for reverb and Clouds for the pitch shift:

Just save it as a selection if you want to add it to a patch.

Another option is to buy the Host-FX module, then run a free plugin one such as Solaris.

There isn’t a native VCV shimmer module yet, AFAIK. Gregsbrain is a really good pitch shifter too, if you wanted to try that in the feedback loop.

Thanks for recommending gregsbrain xVox, it works really well in a feedback loop.

Yeah, I’m working on a v2.0 shimmer patch now! I tried xVox but decided it sounded a bit harsh so I’ve gone back to Clouds. If you use a normal pitch shifter, the shifted signal comes through straight away, and I want it to slowly build up, more like a bloom effect. Using Clouds makes it more diffuse, but I’m also experimenting with a delay to slow down the pitch build up, and a few extra Plateau modules to smooth it out even more.

Well you’ve definitely opened up a rabbit hole for me, been listening to the same drone for hours now  its just so addictive. Currently its Audio to a mixer, then to Airwindows galactic, then to a slow 100%delay, then to xVox transposed +7 semitones, and looped back to the mixer. Sounds lovely. Very curious to see what you’ll conjure up.

Ooh, didn’t try Galactic! But yeah, there’s something magic about the shimmer effect that makes people use it far too much (including me!). Seven semitones is a perfect fifth, sounds great as long as you don’t play too many notes. I ended up using x3 Plateau, delay and chorus in the feedback loop. Stand by, uploading the new patch and a crappy tutorial later!

Here you go…

From the description:

“Quick tutorial on an updated version of my free shimmer reverb using VCV. In this video I badly demonstrate how it works, compare my effort to the commercial Valhalla Shimmer plugin, and also do a short demo of how it sounds for ambient guitar.” :joy:

Nice!!! Well done, it sounds incredible on guitar.

Nice one Ed. I quite like the one you built in Rack, good job.

Thanks, I’ve spent countless hours playing guitar into variations of this patch and tweaking it!

Also thanks @LarsBjerregaard, I genuinely think the DIY rack option compares quite well with dedicated shimmer plugins. Supermassive into Valhalla Shimmer is my new GOAT for space ambient reverb though! Ultramassive maybe? The only thing is it takes so long to build up that you don’t hear any reverb at all for a few seconds, like a huge predelay. I would probably use two Supermassives in parallel, which a shorter one as the main send reverb, and the shimmer one at a slightly lower level for added space/harmonics. Plenty of good options!
