All-pass filter/diffusion network module?

Inspired by the sounds in this tutorial, I’m looking for a module that would work similarly to Kilohearts Disperser, or the “diffusion” filter mode in Serum 2. Maybe a phaser with optional modulation and a high number of stages could work–the highest I know of is the Surge phaser with 16 stages. I experimented briefly with saw wave osc → 3 phasers in series → distortion, and did get some interesting results–particularly when the feedback was set to -100%–but that appeared to have more to do with a massive gain spike (like ~40v or something crazy like that) that the negative feedback caused.

This is probably what you want, it was inspired by Disperser. Makes a simple click or trigger into a great kick drum!

For a simple allpass filter you can wire in series, try KRT J. I like to chain a load of those together with feedback and ping it, makes quite organic, woody or metallic tones - a kind of DIY physical modelling.

Thanks for the KRT J reference!

I had been wanting to explore all pass filters for a while now, ever since I saw a video from Jason about the Instruo dapf (Dual All Pass Filter).

But the dapf is not available in VCV. :frowning:

The KRT module names are so cryptic, and the communication from the author is so inscrutable, that I long ago gave up on that plugin. My loss - the J seems to work pretty well. I’ll have to give the KRT plugin another chance. Meanwhile, I now have a module with which I can begin to explore the world of all pass filters!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. If you want to wire a polyphonic module like KRT J in series, try the Venom Recurse. Assuming you have a mono signal, then a single J with one Recurse gives you up to 16 low pass filters in series. Or the Recurse Stereo gives you up to 32 in series, or 16 if you start with a stereo signal.

Thanks, yep I’ve used that before. Agree with you on the inscrutable names for the KRT collection, I forget what that’s called myself sometimes!

There isn’t a huge choice for allpass so that one is handy. DocB has one too but it seems to act more like a delay.

Another +1 for the KRT “J” allpass. For reasons similar to those above, it’s the one and only KRT module I keep in my personal library. :man_shrugging:

Just spotted another option in the announcements thread:

Yeah, I saw that too. That module has additional effects beside selectively shifting the phase of certain frequencies. Perhaps it is more similar to the docB all pass. I need to wrap my head around a vanilla all pass, so I will probably stick to KRT J initially. But Diffuse does look interesting.

Back in July 2024, I asked the good folks at Instruo if there was any chance we might see dapf in VCV:

“… We use VCV a lot in house for teaching, and while It would be cool to model the dåpf into VCV, at the moment we are just far too busy to take on a porting project like the dåpf!”

Maybe one day. :crossed_fingers:
