Wanting a 'tight' envelope follower

I’ve got a sample (it’s a distant woodpecker) that I’d like to make into an envelope.

I’ve tried a few followers. Sapphire Env is about the best (see output (blue line) below, but it has a long release time that I don’t seem to be able to remove. The rise time is really tight, but I want the release to be the same (to be able to create a block/knock type sound, thus simulating the woodpecker without the reverb and echo that came with the recording).

I’ve tried the trick of putting the envelope into a vca and exponentially multiplying it, but that really only works if all the peaks are the same, otherwise it amplifies the differences.

Any ideas welcome.

flux/leakage might get you there?

Perfect! The forum delivers again. Thank you.

Using the ‘rate’ on those I can get everything from ‘click’ level up to a nice short transient
