Venom Development blog - Latest: Ratio module + 6 others

I am still waiting for Chaos Boxes to be released by VCV. I’ve asked for the release to be as soon as possible. Andrew cannot give me a release date. Hopefully it will be soon . . .

I’ve gone ahead and published the Chaos Boxes documentation.

There should be a simultaneous update to Venom Oscillations for an esoteric bug fix and improved rendering of square buttons.

I just bought your Chaos Boxes. I was waiting money in hand. Now to dive in. Thank you so much for the amazing modules!

Wow - you bought it before I even new it had been released!

Thanks!

So Chaos Boxes was released within the past 20 minutes, and wouldn’t you know it, I have a music performance tonight that I have to prepare for, so it will be a while before I can post a formal announcement. Ugh!

Venjolin+ is amazing! I had been very happy with your earlier Matrix Benjolin patch modded with Audible Instruments Macro Synthesizer (Plaits) as the external source for regular use in Bitwig Studio and operated through my MIDI Fader Controller. This is now a totally streamlined and beautiful instrument to play with.

I would be glad to share my patch using Venjolin+ if it would be acceptable to do so (Venjolin+ is the only paid module in the patch).

I am, however, experiencing a small annoyance, but I suspect it is a Bitwig to VCV Clap thing where the parameter states for VCV are being stored in the patch with the last sent value from Bitwig and this becomes an offset for when the patch is next opened. I might try correcting this with a block of Patchmaster controls that act as a go-between VCV FX Grid output values and the stored settings (Venjolin+, BogAudio Offset, Audible Macro Synth/Plaits, and Plateau all seem to be affected by this to lesser or greater amounts). It’s an easy 45 seconds to correct at the start of a session, but it interrupts the potential flow state.

Again, thank you so much for this, Dave! Grazie!

Wonderful news - thanks! Yes, please feel free to post the patch. It would be best in the Chaos Boxes announcement thread.

Inclusion of a video or audio recording with your patch in use would be extra special!

I hope you can solve your Bitwig issue. Let me know if you figure out the problem is on on my end.

It’s not your plugins. It is something about Clap and VST3. Only VST2 on Windows or Linux with Bitwig Studio v6.0.3 are working as expected (Linux has some frame resizing issues).

Have reported to VCV Support.

Since Chaos Boxes has been released I have finished developing the last three modules for my upcoming v2.15 release of the free Venom plugin.

Null Cable

Nullify a cable by setting it to 0 channels via manual or CV control. documentation
This is basically a compact version of the Sapphire Moots module, giving you 3 input/output pairs in 3 hp as opposed to 5 pairs in 10 hp. There are a few more differences that you can read about in the documentation.

Poly Mute

Mute individual channels of two polyphonic inputs via buttons or CV. documentation
This is a fairly strait forward version of a stereo poly mute module, but there are some interesting twists described in the documentation.

Poly Prune

Remove selected channels and/or sort channels from a polyphonic input. documentation
This came about largely as a result of this inquiry. Definitely read the manual to get a sense of the potential of this module. It pairs really well with Poly Mute and WinComp.

Here is an example of how it could work to remove channels that fall outside the range 1 - 3 volts, like in the original request:

All eight new modules are available for testing if you have a free GitHub account.
Venom v2.15.dev4 binaries

I plan to submit version 2.15 to the Library by this weekend. So you have a little time to test and report bugs or doc errors, or request changes.

Once released I need to take a break from development and actually get back to making some music!

Here is the proposed change log for the upcoming release:

I need some help deciding if I should create a module or not!

First I need to provide some background . . .

Over three years ago I ran an experiment with the VCV WT-LFO to see if I could turn it into a 1 shot oscillator - effectively an Attack Decay Envelope Generator. It worked much better than I thought, and I ended up with a very curious and unique construct that functioned like an AD EG, VCA, and Wave Shaper, all in one.

Here is a performance video that uses the construct. I ended up using that recording, cleaned up and renamed as Harvest Waltz on my Fundamental Air album.

You can watch a video about the AD EG / VCA / Wave Shaper construction over on PatchStorage (You are welcome to try the patches, but this is not what I want people to test now)

The video is kind of long and dry. The key concept is a Wave Table that transitions from ascending ramp to triangle to descending ramp. Turning it into a one shot generates an AD envelope. Modulating the wave table position with a VCO is what adds the VCA and wave shaping functionality.

Recently I realized I could easily replicate the functionality using my VCO Unit or VCO Lab. They have a built in LFO one shot capability, and the triangle wave has a skew shape modulation option that goes from ascending ramp to triangle to descending ramp, along with shape CV modulation input.

I tested it out, and it works pretty well. I fleshed out a bunch of modulation options, and added a PatchMaster UI with Venom Bay module patch bays.

Venom Hybrid AD-VCA-WaveShaper.vcv (4.3 KB) Please test this patch

The UI is on the left, and the working innards are on the right. The only innards module that is absolutely required is the right-most VCO Unit. The 2nd VCO Unit + Slew provides LFO modulation that introduces repeating attacks. The Shaped VCA gives the option for logarithmic or exponential response, and the Mix 4 is used to remove the DC offset from the final output.

My question - is this worth turning into a stand-alone Venom module? If I did I would add CV inputs for all of the modulation options. I would probably offer waveform and shaping options for the internal modulation LFO as well.

I would appreciate if some people download the patch, give it a try, and let me know what you think.

To use the patch, configure the MIDI-CV for a polyphonic keyboard. Best to set the polyphony to 16 with rotating polyphony so each note can ring out. Experiment with the knobs on the PatchMaster UI to see what types of sounds you can get, and give your verdict!

Thanks!

Maybe im just daft, but I could not get either patch to function properly on my machine. First patch was missing most of the patch cables, do not know why and the second patch i was not sure how to get sound out even reading your notes to follow the patch. But I am daft.

I call B.S. - you are certainly not daft!

But I am puzzled as to what is going on. Are you trying to work with the patch(es) from PatchStorage? They should work, but I included that link just for background info.

I was intending for you to try the “Venom Hybrid AD-VCA-WaveShaper” patch from my post above - the one just above the patch image toward the bottom. That patch would most likely sound like any module I make, should I choose to do so.

ah reading where I try to skip steps, lol

i was trying the patchstorage stuff, it is likely older version rack

I will try again with the patch you have in bold blue letters so even i can find it

@DaveVenom well in very initial testing with just the querty midi keyboard, it is very interesting

like waveshaping going on as well at quicker setting it seems like, very interesting sounds, and the repetitions are fun, like bouncing ball sounds and almost strange resonances like karplus almost but not quite fast enough for that sound, very curious as it develops across slow rate env. And the quicker stuff is suitable for percussion goodies. I like it, one vote for it. Envelopes are one of the main building blocks so having a strange one that has evolving textures as its main use seems great to me.
