Headless operation. That means I can toss any number of computers at the job, and I don’t need to worry about X Window support or its overhead.

do you think you’d be able to chain together a bunch of rasp pis to make a portable “vcv synth” this way?
How will you patch cables?
My reason is to throw more horse power at the job. I don’t think RasPis are a good choice for these sort of things. As far as patching, that’s part of instrument design, and I consider that separate from the playing. When I’m actually playing the things, it’s all about hardware controllers, and I avoid the typewriter keyboard and mouse. The messages from these are short enough that over a not-at-all-crowded GigE network, there’s no noticable performance penalty. I’ve actually run JACK audio return over the net too, and I’ve not heard problems.
