=== vcp challenge #68: oldskool jungle ===

you are challenged to make a patch in vcv rack to showcase creative use of modules, so other users may get inspired. you can also win eternal fame!

for this edition, the challenge is to make a patch that is inspired by oldskool jungle, with its rapid breakbeats, deep basslines, and a mix of samples and synths. the seminal track for the genre is “we are i.e.”

this challenge will run for four weeks, as it is summer holiday for me, and i will be traveling for part of this month.

good luck!

A glitchy patch with robots and fast rhythms.

My take. Some breaks, wandering bass, supportive kicks and extra samples.

This has been a really great challenge with nice, inspiring entries from everyone. It’d be a big stretch to call my results “old skool jungle”. But I’m pleased with it considering that I didn’t even know what an “amen break” was until the day this challenge was posted and I went in search of more info. I ran a lot of experiments trying to figure out how to get the sound of various jungle break samples in VCV without actually using the samples. In the end I did what I enjoy most about working in VCV Rack. I picked a module I’d never used, in this case MIDI Poly 16 driven by Arturia Minilab MKII, and started jamming. Enjoy!

Well, it isn’t exactly oldskool jungle, no breakbeats for starters. Though the tempo is supposedly okay at 170 BPM and the rhythm section is essentially the “Anthem” beat, but broken up in 1 bar segments. Some parts are generative, most of it is sequenced.

All samples from Ableton Live Lite, other voices pure synthesis.

The video is a very slightly audio reactive patch which uses a video of a dancing crowd and mangles the video stream to something quite abstract in Touch Designer. You can vaguely see a DJ and some dancers if you know where to look.
