=== vcp challenge #61: equinox ===

you are challenged to make a patch in vcv rack to showcase creative use of modules, so other users may get inspired. you can also win eternal fame!

for this edition, the challenge is to make a patch on the theme of the upcoming equinox (march 20). to inspire you, i offer a classic interpretation by jean-michel jarre:

== rules ==

  • make a patch in vcv rack and upload your patch to patchstorage.com and/or in your reply to this thread
  • tag your upload with vcp-61
  • make a video showcasing your patch and upload it to youtube (if possible)
  • add a link to your video as a comment to this post
  • give feedback on other participantsā€™ patches

deadline: monday end of the day, wherever you are, march 22nd

Cool! I can finally use phaser strings in a song! Iā€™m serious. I never use phaser strings because it sounds like JMJ (who I love).

This is one of my favorite bossa nova songsā€¦ Ɓguas de marƧo by A.C. Jobim.

The Waters of March was written about the autumnal equinox in the southern hem. but here in the north, I think it is also apt for the vernal equinox.

Thanks to the Entrian Timeline that I have used again, the patch in vcv-rack was straightforward. I spent more time in musescore than in vcv-rack.

The patch I posted below uses the free Entrian Player Timeline so anyone can open it fully. I also had to remove the compressor because it was panicing on open (I will have to investigate, I donā€™t know why)

This patch has some modules interconnected with virtual cables and such

It was fun trying to come up with this entry! Soā€¦Kraftwerk would be my number one influence for electronic music, but JMJ is a close second (Tomitaā€™s probably third). I actually avoid writing anything like those musicians, but this time I get a free pass! Sure, it sounds like a second rate knockoff of JMJ, because thatā€™s what it is! Entrianā€™s timeline made it a lot easier to write this type of music in VCV.

Great Stuff!

A.w.e.s.o.m.e. and great sounds!!!

Incredible. I canā€™t wait to look into the patch and try to understand how you came up with such goodness!

Algoritmarte mentioned there wasnā€™t much stereo/panning going on in the song, and heā€™s right! Somehow I initialized the delay settings and it wasnā€™t really doing much. I also forgot to add the Bogaudio Unison modules and usually Iā€™ll automate some panning on the mixer and I forgot to do that too.

So I updated the patch and did a new video. Algoritmarte, let me know if this is better.

Hello I have made an Equinox patch, I have created 3 songs/tunes, can I submit these as a ā€˜suiteā€™ or does it have to be one track/tune only. Unfortunately my laptop canā€™t handle video making; so it would have to be Patchstorage and Soundcloud, would that still fit the criteria.

ā€¦ (IMO) it took it to another level :clap: :clap: :clap:!!! For this type of music the ā€œspatialā€ component is fundamental, just listen to JMJ (and Suzanne Ciani takes it further, as most of her live performances are quadraphonic).

Equinox inspired. Right.

JMJ didā€™t quite do it for me. I was more into Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze at the time.

So ā€¦ the equinox bit is the low drone at 366 / 6 = 61 Hz, offset in amplitude by 1/6 Hz so that there is two times a year (the equinox) where night and day are the same length. The drone is further frequency modulated slightly by a lunar frequency at 27.35 / 6 Hz and volume modulated over the entire length of the song at 366 / 2 = 183 seconds. There is some other astronomy inspired effects in there as well.

All free modules, mostly generative, except for the segmentation in parts by the janneker/jooper combo.

@ady34 a suite is fine, and if you canā€™t do video, weā€™ll take what you can do. maybe someone can take the patches and make a video for you?

That is just lovely - great job! ā€œFlutey chordā€ā€¦ :+1: :+1:

Thanks I will get my bits and pieces together and present them on here and Soundcloud. I have used similar modules to Cabotage KSM, but I donā€™t think it is too derivative of his patch. Track 1 Equinoxe-The ascent of man by Adrian Bottomley (soundcloud.com)

Just because I was experimenting with live play (without a Pad controller), I bring you another equinox inspired patch.

It has some similarities with the the previous equinox entry, the noise wave, the low drone at 366 / 6 Hz and the occasional meteor shower (just a series of bleeps, mind), but other than that this is totally different.

The clock, yeah well, the clock is derived from the the rhythm of the seasons in that it zero crossings at dawn and sunset are used to generate the pulse. The days always have the same length but during the summer the daytime is longer and in the winter shorter. The effect - also that of stealing time from the winter to the summer solstice which is highest in the spring equinox - is almost too subtle to be heard.

The clock plays a kick drum and some sequences. A number of pads have been set up to control the quality and such of the various voices, so you can play live in VCV rack only. Normally, you would use a Pad MIDI Controller for this. In the video I play it myself, by twisting virtual knobs and the sliders of the mixer.

All modules are free.

Nice. I really like the ā€œlickā€ (is it?) and its permutations. Driven by Orcaā€™s Heart, I assume?

This is my entry to the challenge ā€¦ it is the result of a triple failure :grin: : I wanted to create something inspired by JMJ ā€¦ but 1) I havenā€™t been able to find any interesting melodic line (nor generative), and 2) I havenā€™t been able to recreate some JMJ good sounds by myself; then I switched to a more ā€œclassicalā€ approach and 3) tried to recreate a good flute sound with Elements (Audible Instruments Modal Synthesizer), but totally failed :triumph:

The patch can be downloaded here:

The flute sound is closer than I have got, so did you make it using Elements? Omri Cohen made a flute patch using AI Macro Oscillator, it is on Patchstorage, I harvested that one! The flute sounds great!
