They’ve been moved under appData (which are hidden by default in the file explorer).
You’re right – for Rack as a plugin (VST/CLAP) you have to set the environment variable.
@pachde ! found them in a back up i had. but thanks for trying to point me in the right direction. Not a cool move when I have a pined folder on my sidebar called patches and I get an error saying the location can not be found. Nothing like the prospect of losing years worth of work to give the heart a little kick.
Normally I love VCV rack and updates are painless but this was a major PIA. Hopefully never again.
There should be added an option to set your own “user folder” for patches and recordings. I’m imagining many Rack users are completely flipping right now… Nothing gets deleted, but moved to a (sometimes hidden) folder where you’d normally never look for audio or patches
So on Mac. What you have to do is just a couple steps:
- Open a Finder window and go Command-Shift-Period to show the hidden files.
- Navigate to the hidden User>Library>Application Support folder.
- Find Rack2 and right-click and select “Make Alias”
- Move the Alias to where you are used to finding the Rack2 folder.
I think it would be nicer to ask the user to specify or create a recording and patch save folder rather than put it into a directory that is not normally accessible. I would not expect most Mac users to know the secret key combo to make the folder appear.
You can easily open Rack’s user folder by clicking Help > “Open user folder” in Rack’s menu bar.
When saving new Rack patches/selections/presets and VCV Recorder recordings, a dialog appears to select the location and filename. If you don’t like saving to Rack’s user folder, you can choose any folder on your computer. It is completely up to you.
Yes. But the save dialog for patches, selections etc. doesn’t remember the last chosen directory, so it becomes a bit tedious. Also a user can’t select a default directory for patches etc. in Rack configuration. It would help if we could.
I had convinced myself that Rack 2.5.1 does remember the last chosen directory under Windows 11. To be fair, I am not totally sure about this, but I think once I saved a patch and selection into the desired directory, Rack remembered and I have not had to worry about it since.
From what I remember, starting from a “New” patch via the menu always defaults to the Rack user folder when you save.
But if you open a patch from somewhere else and activate “Save As”, then it defaults to the source of the originally opened patch.
Typically I don’t start from a “New” patch, and my saves go to the location I expect. But on the rare occasion I do start a “New” patch, it often confuses me when it does not save where I expect.
Yeah, I’m not sure exactly how, but Rack 2.5.1 is perfectly synced with my desired directories for everything and I did nothing more that change paths in the Rack file manager window.
It could be how I create new patches. Once my template loads, I delete it and load a selection file that I use as a template. But I just tried it without deleting the template and then doing a save-as and it still has the correct directory path,
Would you submit these two ideas to VCV Support so we can look into them?
