Is there a dedicated Buchla style oscillator module in the library?

Is there a dedicated Buchla style oscillator in the VCV library? And if there’s not a hardware clone, is there any recommendation for similar Buchla style oscillator modules that are west coast inspired but not 1:1 from anything? On a west coast synthesis kick lately and was hoping there was already a Buchla module available like how Reaktor has a west coast block or there’s already dedicated west coast synthesis plugins for desktop and iOS

hello,

nigoq or drift you can test.

Karl

If you mean WestCoast as in WaveShaping based? There are many ways and modules to do this.

But, if you are specifically looking for Buchla inspired modules, maybe check out some the NYSTHI Collection

Or try the the Buchla Music Easel inspired Algorithm Zefiro

Hmm, good suggestion! Thanks, I will try out that module and some of the nysthi modules, but maybe it’s also a good idea to find somewhere they dissected a buchla into parts I can replace with other modules, if for example I wanted to fold a wavetable oscillator instead or use a different low pass gate, mostly looking at the oscillator side though

yes, you can break everything into bricks, but the bricks inside a buchla are 2 waveform osc, with sync fm and ring mod between them, wavefolder to fold even more shapes, waveshaping to fatten, and thats before I pass the audio out of the oscillator section

go venom, 2 VCO Units and the vc quad polarizer for ring mod, the wavefolder, pick your shaper I’m partial to docB clipper

if you want it prerolled, the Instruo Cs-L is not Buchla but it is hella fun

there’s this one, too: VCV Library - MADZINE NIGOQ

More great suggestions, I will try that first, maybe I can even combine the two oscillators you recommended but I will have to try some different waveshaper modules for different folds too

Yes! That’s it! Will likely try that with XM-OP

i tried this vco more than one time, but for me sometimes it does not react as expected. On the other hand, i must say, the documentation is getting better.

I’d really like to see a shamelessly Buchla-style complex oscillator in the library myself. I really want to love Hügelton’s K102, but it’s missing knob graphics and a number of the controls are mislabeled backwards, so I couldn’t recommend it. When I do want to scratch that ‘west coast’ itch, I usually reach for either the Intstruo Cs-L or my personal favorite, Vult Vessek (definitely a far cry from the traditional Buchla style, but ticks most of the boxes, viz. a pair of tone generators w/FM, AM, wavefolding, etc., plus it sounds just gargantuan to boot…)

Yep, that instruo oscillator can definitely scratch the itch, so I’ve got plenty of combinations from the suggestions here… obviously with modular monsters like these you’re not as limited so I can put a filter immediately after the complex oscillator and different effects (probably to go through my forsitan homework catch-up), and I will probably attach some extra modulation go for something that’s droning and evolving rather than sequenced… but it could be both!

but none of these vco s are, compared with Buchla 259, a oscillator from the Buchla world. i must say, that after some research in the library, the vco from madzine will be the only one.

Maybe you are not just looking for Buchla style oscillators? Maybe you just want to explore West Coast synthesis? In that case, there are many VCV Rack modules to help you explore the various techniques.

Here’s a brief introduction to the core concepts:

How West Coast Synthesis Works

I’m familiar with west coast synthesis, was just looking for a buchla emulation and similar oscillator to satisfy my cravings

I have created an emulation of the Buchla 259 using existing modules (mostly Venom).

I don’t know how much it sounds like the actual hardware, but most of the features are implemented.
